Onslow County residents should expect closures and delays in the coming months as the Sneads Ferry Camp Lejeune Gate begins security upgrades.

The gate closure is in support of regular pre-planned maintenance, upgrades and testing by the installation, according to Deputy Director of CommStrat MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJ Major RJ Powers. He said the Sneads Ferry Gate upgrades are the last phase of the current operation. There are no additional projected dates for future gate closures at this time.

"Planned improvements have been in active progress since May 2022 beginning with the Wilson Gate, followed by the Midway Park Gate," Power said in an email. "The Camp Johnson Gate completed its upgrade and testing on Jan. 27, 2023."

Security upgrades to the Sneads Ferry Gate will require a full closure beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. through Sunday Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. and Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m. through Sunday, March 26 at 6 p.m., according to a recent news release from the base.

In addition to the closure dates, the gate will also be reduced to single lane traffic from Monday, Feb. 27 through Friday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During phase one and phase three, the complete closures, personnel should access the installation via an alternate gate, the release said. During phase two, the single lane traffic from Feb. 27 to March 24, personnel who regularly use the Sneads Ferry Gate should expect increased traffic and delays during this time.

Powers said they encourage all personnel to pay close attention to the publicized closure dates and to prepare for increased commute times and delays, adding drivers should also expect increased traffic at the Wilson Gate during the Sneads Ferry Gate construction.

"Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is committed to the continued enhancement of our security to ensure the safety of service members, employees and families living and working on the installation as well as that of the local Jacksonville community," Powers said.

He added that any updates will continue to be posted to www.lejeune.marines.mil as well as MCB Camp Lejeune’s social media pages.
