There’s no doubt the British royal family’s massive, decade-long renovation plan for Buckingham Palace has a lot of moving parts–especially considering it’s estimated to cost a casual 369 million pounds (about $455 million). A few years into the project, the family has given us a peek inside their home’s major upgrade.

Today, the Royal family's official Instagram account posted a series of videos showing some of the rooms and hallways that have been stripped of furniture, flooring, and artwork.

They also highlighted a few hidden treasures found during the process: newspaper cuttings dating back to 1954 and old cigarette boxes. Pretty crazy, right?

The videos emphasize how electric cabling, plumbing, and heating in the palace haven’t been updated since the ‘50s. The renovations aim to make the palace more energy efficient and cost effective. They also said the project is “vital in order to mitigate the risk of fire and flood and will ensure that old wiring is brought in line with current health and safety standards,” according to one Instagram post.

A few weeks prior to this preview, the same account shared a video detailing wallpaper conservation in Buckingham Palace’s Yellow Drawing room. It features a wallpaper conservator who explains how the nineteenth century Chinese wallpaper was taken off the walls to be restored and protected during construction. It will then be returned to the walls it once graced when work on the building's fundamental issues is complete.

Here's to hoping we get to see more of this as the project progresses!
