🌱 SNL Spoofs The Kings + Valley Hi Mural Event + "Clue" On Stage

Happy Tuesday, Sacramento! Let's get this day started off right. Here's everything you need to know today in Sacramento.

First, today's weather:

Patchy fog in the morning. High: 58 Low: 38.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. It's no secret to Sacramentans that the Kings have had their share of COVID-related issues. Now, it's no secret to the rest of the country (or maybe the world) either, because Saturday Night Live poked a little fun at the team and their COVID-impacted roster Saturday night after their game against the Nets, giving them a ribbing for their poor performance. At least the Kings had an advantage in asthma attacks. (Good Day Sacramento)

  2. A homeowner was shot early Monday with his own firearm that a burglary suspect found in a gun safe at his home, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. It’s not clear if the gun safe had been locked or broken into. As the homeowner went to confront the suspect, he was shot at at least twice in the upper body, authorities said. The victim was taken to the hospital and later died. (KCRA3)

  3. An accident on Highway 99 in Elk Grove led to a vehicle exploding and catching fire on Saturday, said the Sacramento California Highway Patrol. A silver Hyundai traveling at a high speed hit a minivan causing them to lose control of their vehicle and collide with the highway center divider. The minivan burst into flames after the occupant had escaped the vehicle. The car that caused the original collision also crashed, flipping over, but the suspect fled the scene before officers could detain him. (CBS Sacramento)

  4. Local pastor Dr. Tecoy Porter has announced his run for the California State Assembly District 10. “The newly redrawn congressional and legislative districts will allow me to achieve bigger strides in making neighborhoods throughout the state more equitable for all citizens,” siad Dr. Porter, pastor of Meadowview’s Genesis Church. Dr. Porter already has a strong base that will continue to support his run for state assembly. The latest endorsement comes from former Sacramento City Councilmember Lauren Hammond. 5. Dozens of families came out on Monday to paint and unite on Valley Hi Drive for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day community mural event. The mural features the portraits of five artists from different races who have made a difference promoting inclusion and diversity in the U.S. Organizers wanted families to create artwork together to revitalize the Valley Hi neighborhood and bring hope for the future. Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera’s drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
