Original story

Snow and ice have closed Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The popular paved road is temporarily closed from Rainbow Curve on the east side to Milner Pass on the west side, the park announced in a Monday morning press release.

The park is unsure how long the road will be closed but said the Trail Ridge Road recorded status line, 970-586-1222, will be updated when the road opens.

Trail Ridge Road, which climbs to 12,183 feet and is the highest continuous paved road in the U.S., opened May 26. Last year, it closed for the winter Oct. 24.

The release did not mention if Old Fall River Road remained open. That unpaved road also takes visitors to the Alpine Visitor Center. It is scheduled to close to vehicle traffic for the season on Oct. 3.

Fall is a popular time in the park to take in the aspen changing and elk bugling.
