Snow Day event is Saturday in Kent

While its name might not be indicative of the weather Saturday, Main Street Kent and the City of Kent will be celebrating with a Snow Day.

The event will include a variety of winter events outdoors and at participating businesses. The family-friendly event will feature themed crafts, a hot cocoa bar, face painting, winter menu specials, decorations, a polar putt putt activity and a winter scavenger hunt.

Sponsors include Talk On, LLC Speech and Occupational Therapy, Each + Every, Wright Heating and Hometown Bank.

Activities at Hometown Bank Plaza include live music, outdoor fire pits and free s’mores, while they last. Snow Day Scavenger Hunt Cards will be available at the Main Street Kent tent. Those who complete the hunt will get a free cake pop from Daisy Pops. There will be live music from Grandpa Winnie at 2 p.m.; City of Invention at 3:30 p.m. and Van Sailin' at 6 p.m.

Dan Smith Community Park on Erie Street (between Bricco and Barflyy) will host free winter activities all day. The park also will be a collection site for donations of hats and gloves to help Kent City Schools students stay warm this winter.

An elegant ice snowman carving demo will be held at 1 p.m., with three ice carvings on display all day. Snowman photo opportunities will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. The Portage Park District will demonstrate how to make a pinecone bird feeder, and Kent Parks and Recreation will lead a snowman craft.

Other activities will take place at Acorn Plaza and the gazebo at West Main Street and Franklin Avenue, as well as participating businesses.

They include Scribbles, where customers can make a free coffee filter snowflake; McKay Bricker Framing, where customers can make a free pinecone gnome; a free Pick-A-String crystal game at Hippie Fox Rocks; free snowball pong at Sun in Leo; a free Bewitched Snowballs game at Branded in Kent; a Snowbrawl Game at Off the Wagon; free cookie decorating at Just Add Cookies at the Kent Health Department building; winter kids crafts hosted by Kent Jaycees and Talk On Speech Therapy; a free snowflake leaf rubbing at Flourish Plant Market; a free marshmallow toss at Bent Tree Coffee, which also will sell Hot Cocoa Flights; free face painting at Popped!

In addition, Acorn Plaza will host Polar Putt Putt Golf; Daisy Cake Pops will let customers make their own Snow Day cake pop for $5; Townhall II will host free snowball cornhole, hot tea and treats; North Water Brewing will sell spiked hot chocolate and host free patio cornhole. Bell Towner Brewing will offer a candlelight dinner and a free poetry reading and poem-writing mini workshop, and North Water Brewing will feature live music with Michael Buebe.
