Snow emergencies, virtual school day, closures and cancelations precede winter storm

Jan. 8—CLINTON — With a winter storm bearing down on eastern Iowa, schools have already announced closures and events are being canceled

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Clinton and surrounding counties that will go into effect at 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Heavy snow expected with total snow accumulations between 7 and 12 inches. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night leading to considerable blowing and drifting snow.

The warning extends over portions of north central, northwest and west central Illinois and east central, northeast and southeast Iowa.

Here are some weather announcements:

—The Clinton Community School District announced this morning that all of its schools will have a virtual learning day on Tuesday.

—The Central DeWitt School Board canceled its Monday night work session

—The cities of Morrison and Fulton, Illinois, have declared a snow emergency going into effect at 6 p.m. today.

—The Stonecroft Clinton Women's Connection brunch for Wednesday, Jan. 10, is canceled. The next brunch is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 14.

—The Satellite location for the Clinton County Treasurer in DeWitt will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 9. The Treasurer intends to have services available in the home office 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

—Calendar parking will be in effect in Camanche from 6 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Friday.

—All meal sites closed and home delivered meals canceled for MilestonesAAA.

The weather service and local agencies are advising against travel.

But if you do, the weather service advises that you keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
