Snow emergency declared in St. Paul in advance of freezing weekend temps

The city of St. Paul has declared a snow emergency in light of anticipated snow accumulation through Friday and freezing temperatures this weekend. Plowing of posted “night plow” routes is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday, with “day plow” routes plowed after 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Vehicles not moved accordingly will be ticketed and towed. All of downtown is a night plow route, so visitors should not park at downtown street meters after 9 p.m. Thursday. Several parking ramps offer $5 overnight specials.

“We’re really hoping to take advantage of the warmer weather,” said Lisa Hiebert, a spokesperson for St. Paul Public Works. “The snow is wet and heavy, which our plows will be able to clear pretty well. The temperatures are scheduled to drop over the weekend, and we really want to get it up and off the ground before it freezes.”

“If people don’t move their cars, it’s going to be really hard to get that snow removed,” Hiebert said.

The National Weather Service forecasted 3 to 5 inches of snow for the Twin Cities Thursday morning to Friday night, with most of that falling Thursday. Higher snowfall totals were expected west of the Twin Cities.

Temperatures will begin dropping this weekend. After highs near 35 and 31 Thursday and Friday, Saturday’s high is expected to be near 22 and Sunday’s should fall to near 14. Highs could be in the single digits early next week.

In St. Paul, roughly 50 city snow plows were deployed on main arterial streets Wednesday and Thursday morning.
