Snow is expected to come to Bloomington, and stick around this afternoon, as temperatures drop into the 20s throughout the evening.

Alexander McGinnis, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, says snow is expected to begin in Monroe County around 1 p.m. and continue through approximately 6 p.m. Friday.

How much snowfall is expected?

According to the NWS forecast, Monroe County is expected to receive between two to three inches of snow throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Is the snow expected to stick?

Yes. McGinnis said despite the warmer temperatures Monroe County has been witnessing lately, and the above-freezing temperatures earlier in the day, snow is expected to begin sticking in the mid-afternoon as pavement temperatures drop.

“So what could appear to be a false sense of security early on could lead to people getting caught off guard with slick roads here late in the day and with the evening rush hour," McGinnis said.

Will the snow stay over the weekend?

Snow could melt as temperatures rise on Sunday, but the low temperatures predicted for Saturday – reaching below 20 degrees early Saturday morning – mean snow is expected to stick around, and could potentially create hazardous conditions.

“So certainly anything that does not get shoveled or plowed today is going to stick around at least the early parts of the weekend,” McGinnis said.
