Snow flurries possible Friday morning

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Don’t get too excited, but there is a chance of light snow flurries Friday morning.

Temperatures will dip into the 30s overnight Thursday into Friday, and will climb to the mid-40s in the daytime. Some light rain is possible.

But some snow flurries may come with it, the first we’ve seen this winter.

Todd Demers says it will be too warm for any accumulation, so if any snow falls it won’t stick around long.

“As we head into tomorrow, here it comes. We have been talking about that chance of light snow and light rain. That’s gonna be pushing toward the area starting early tomorrow morning and continuing throughout the early afternoon,” said Todd Demers. “But you can also see these temperatures are right around 40 degrees. That means if we do see some slight snow fall it will be melting very rapidly.”

While we don’t expect a rush for milk and bread, some people are preparing.

The Johnsons are visiting from the North, where they are used to yearly snow and used to being prepared.

“We have the snow thrower ready, the shovels, and coats and hats and gloves,” said Becky and Jim Johnson from Massillon, Ohio.

The City of Memphis already has a warming shelter where people can go to get out of the cold.
And we are told they are monitoring road conditions and are on standby, as is the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

In Mississippi, MDOT says it is ready for winter with salt and sand to help if conditions warrant.

They are also reminding you to be prepared by checking your battery, anti-freeze levels, and brakes. Also, ensure your heater, defroster, and windshield wipers are good to go for winter.

You should have a winter weather car kit, with a windshield scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, and snacks just in case.

This may be the first light snow, but it may not be the last.

The best chance to see any will be from about 6 a.m. to noon Friday.

The Shelby County Office of Emergency Preparedness says they are on their normal operations and are not expecting severe winter weather at this time.
