Snow, ice close road through Smokies Friday night

U.S. Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina, closed temporarily as of 4:30 p.m. Feb. 17 because of snow and ice, according to a tweet from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Road Info account.

Colder temperatures moved into the region by Friday morning, bringing snow to higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown. The NWS forecast calls for a chance of snow showers Friday night, but then a sunny Saturday with temperatures warming back up into the 50s.
