Snow likely to impact Monday morning commute in Worcester

More snow is coming to Worcester this weekend. How much? Still too many variables to tell.

On Friday afternoon, Frank Nocera, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton, said he is pretty confident that we’re going to get a few inches of snow starting Sunday night, which will translate to a messy Monday commute.

“Mostly likely, there will be snow-covered roads in Worcester for the morning commute on Monday,” Nocero said. “We’re pretty confident that there will be several inches of snow for the Worcester area Sunday night into Monday morning. It could be more. … It’s a pretty safe bet that people plan right now for, at least, some impact Monday morning for the school and work commute.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainties. How strong is it going to be? Is it going to intensify soon enough to give us a lot of snow?” Nocera said. “Unfortunately, there are still a lot of unknowns.”

Nocera said it’s safe to say that Monday’s morning commute could be a little slippery.

“It should start off as rain sometime in the (Sunday) morning and then start mixing and changing with snow later in the day,” Nocera said. “Will the storm intensify too late and only give us 2 to 3 inches or snow, or does it intensify earlier and bring us heavier snow? I think it will start off as a wet snow and then finish as dry, fully snow.”

Sunday night is supposed to be blustery, with a northeast wind 15 to 22 mph and gusts as high as 33 mph, while a continued chance of snow until noon Monday, followed by a chance of snow showers up to 4 p.m. The high temperature on Monday is expected to be in the low 30s.

It has been a wet month for Worcester, Nocera said.

Through the end of Thursday, the city has seen 6.59 inches of total precipitation (a combination of snow and rain, melted), which is almost 4 inches above normal, Nocera said.
