New snow making helps Pajarito open a week early

Dec. 8—Pajarito Mountain Ski Area outside Los Alamos will open Dec. 15, one week earlier than previously announced.

With minimal snow making, until now Pajarito has relied on natural snow, but since last year has significantly increased snow making.

"We have enough snow making to open a number for runs with snow making," Pajarito spokeswoman Christiana Hudson said.

How many runs will open next week depends on natural snowfall in the next week, she added.

Pajarito will be open mostly Thursday to Sunday after some years of staffing shortages curtailing skiing to Friday to Sunday.

However, the ski area will be open daily through the holidays from Dec. 22 to Jan. 7. The ski area will be open Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Feb. 19 for Presidents Day and March 7 to 17 for spring break.

Pajarito has revived its Saturday multi-week Camp Bluebird ski camp for kids ages 7 to 12 and also offers Learn to Ski Thursdays beginner lessons that are free with purchase of lift ticket and rentals. Free lessons are also available every weekday during spring break March 11 to 15.
