Snow not as bad in Wayne County as northern Indiana, area schools still play it safe

RICHMOND, Ind. — Wayne County didn't get hit as hard as the northern third of Indiana by the overnight winter storm from Tuesday, Jan. 24, to Wednesday, Jan. 25, but area schools still took precautions.

Before there was even a hint of snow Tuesday, all six school systems in Wayne County — Richmond, Northeastern Wayne, Centerville-Abington, Western Wayne, Nettle Creek and Seton Catholic — made the decision to either close or have an e-learning day Wednesday.

Wayne County ended up getting more of a mixture of snow and rain rather than snow and ice, making for a wet, mushy walk to the mailbox instead of one that cakes half your pantlegs in snowflakes.

Most roads in Richmond were clear of snow by noon. Still, some schools played it safe, canceling many of Wednesday's sporting events and other after-school activities. Northeastern Wayne, Western Wayne, Nettle Creek and Seton Catholic Schools announced via social media before the end of the day Wednesday that they would also delay the start of classes Thursday, Jan. 26.
