With snow on the way, Akron residents can use new app to request a plow or salt

With Akron bracing for its first blast of heavy snow since Mayor Shammas Malik took office, City Hall is also preparing to keep residents in the loop on how crews are responding to the misery that could pile up in the roadways.

While the snowplow tracker app that the city plans to roll out in the first 100 days of Mayor Shammas Malik's administration won't be ready for the weekend, residents can request a plow or salt truck through Akron's new informational app, "MyAkron 311." The app is available for free in the app store on all Apple or Android devices.

Stephanie Marsh, the city's communications director, is encouraging residents to download the app to keep help tabs on the storm.

Marsh said the city plans to provide regular updates about weather, road conditions and city crews' progress through the mayor's office's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The city said via social media that its focus Thursday was on pretreating roads, advising drivers that streets near hospitals and schools and along fire/EMS routes will take priority for snow removal. Should the necessity for a parking ban arise, Marsh said, the city will issue a news release with details.

"We are also staffing the 311 call center this Saturday to help enter service requests for folks who call," she added.
