Snow, wind, rain expected across Newfoundland until Tuesday

Newfoundland is expected to be in for a messy mix of snow, wind and rain until Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.

Most of the island is under a special weather statement with a prolonged period of snow in the forecast for much of western and central Newfoundland, along the northeast coast and onto the northern Avalon Peninsula.

"We have a low-pressure system stalled southeast of Nova Scotia that'll continue to bring snow to most of the island today into Tuesday night," says Savio Paul, a meteorologist at Environment Canada's Gander weather office.

"Parts of northeastern Newfoundland could see even up to 30 or 50 centimetres for the total event."

The weather will swing back and forth between snow and rain on the Avalon over the next couple of days.

"The Avalon Peninsula will see snow mixed with rain tonight and changing to showers or drizzle on Monday, before changing back to snow and rain Monday evening into Tuesday," said Paul.

More than 7,100 Newfoundland Power customers were without electricity as of 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with outages affecting Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, Bell Island and parts of Mount Pearl.

Power was expected to be restored by 2:30 p.m., with Newfoundland Power blaming ice on power lines for the outages.

With the mix of weather in the forecast, Paul said it's a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast.

"There's also a lot of uncertainty with the track of the system, so part of northeastern Newfoundland could see a potential warning … some of the high terrain could see up to 15 centimetres of snow," he said.

Channel-Port aux Basques is under a winter storm warning on Sunday morning, with heavy snowfall and blowing snow expected.

However, conditions will improve in the afternoon as the snow tapers off to flurries, before snow moves back into the region Sunday night, continuing into early Monday morning.

A mix of sun and cloud with cool temperatures is forecast for Labrador on Sunday.
