Snowpiercer season three has been officially confirmed by TNT, which means Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs' dramatic vehicle isn't quite ready to pull into its final station just yet.

The series, adapted from Bong Joon Ho's cult 2013 movie of the same name, returned on Monday, January 25 for its second outing. But that hasn't stopped TNT from pre-booking another return ticket before the season even premiered.

And it's just happened again – no matter what happens in season three, we'll be getting a season four (via Variety).

"Snowpiercer has been an incredibly successful series for us that continues to capture the imagination of viewers, grow audience and maintain strong ratings," Sam Linsky and Adrienne O'Riain, co-heads of scripted original programming for TBS, TNT and truTV said.

"All of our seasons embark on an emotional, unexpected ride and the well-plotted storylines will continue to evolve and remain relevant to audiences. We're excited to keep the train running into season four."

But before we arrive at that destination, what's waiting for us in season three? Here's everything you need to know.

It'd probably be easier to predict the path of an avalanche than the date of Snowpiercer's third season premiere, thanks to the fact the first two seasons arrived at wildly different times (January for season one, and May for season two).

Not to mention the fact we're currently still living through *looks around at everything*.

"We went into lockdown last March, before we'd finished the season and we came back in October to finish season two and we were all masked up and being tested," Bess Till actress Mickey Sumner told Collider. "It felt like Snowpiercer did a really good job of keeping us safe. This whole year, I feel like we're somewhat normalizing everything, and yet it's so not normal."

"And not being able to hug everyone when you come to work and hug crew and eat together is upsetting, but I'm so grateful that we can continue to work and that there are safety measures that keep us safe. But it's real. I'm not gonna pretend that it's not weird. I've been pushing for name tags on everyone. I've known people for three years and people are waving and I'm like, 'I don't know who you are, with your mask and shield on.' It's terrible."

"The creative changes are [that] we definitely have reduced the number of day players and background players in the crowd scenes," executive producer Becky Clements told Deadline.

"We've made a significant adjustment there. We've probably given a lot of consideration to, 'Do we need six of our actors in this scene? Is it just as effective with three?' So, a lot of the sort of basic spatial relationship things, following CDC guidelines as best we can – and just minimising the amount of time that those masks are off, and our actors are performing."

As soon as we get shooting dates straight from the production, we'll be able to make more educated guesses as to when it'll drop. We'll keep our binoculars trained on the track of information, waiting for its eventual arrival.

Snowpiercer season 3 cast: Who will be in it?

We fully expect everyone important (and still alive) to return.

That means Daveed Diggs, Sean Bean, Rowan Blanchard, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Steven Ogg, Sam Otto and Sheila Vand will all come back.

Javi (Roberto Urbina) was presumably mauled to death and Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) walked off into the snow never to be seen again.

Thankfully, Connelly will definitely return for the third season – with the writing team performing narrative backflips to make sure the train door stayed open for her.

"Jennifer has been such a great partner in this and also has a very busy professional life…. [Showrunner] Graeme [Manson] knew very early on, so he and the writing team came up with this really great idea of the research station and then the 'time collision' that took us to the end of the season," executive producer Becky Clements said (via TV Line).

"Having the ticking clock of 'We need to make sure we have some place to be at a certain time!' is always valuable, and with a very limiting Wilford always wondering what is happening. When that creative decision came up early in the season break, it was exciting to hear. It's always fun to have a strong emotional reaction to a creative pitch."

We do have confirmation of a new cast member though, with Deadline reporting Emmy winner Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) has joined the team as a new series regular.

Panjabi will play Asha, but further character details are being held back for now.

Snowpiercer season 3 plot: What will the third season be about?

The series uses the film as a jumping-off point, keeping the basic outline. The last surviving humans are battling a now-frozen world by living on a huge train, which travels in perpetual motion. While the folks in first class live a comfortable life, the workers in third exist in extreme poverty and are plotting a revolution.

So maybe don't look to the film for clues as to what's coming next, the show's taken pretty much everything from it, and its narrative course has deviated so wildly from that original plot, we don't expect that film's third act to reveal anything about the series' third carriage.

"I would say we often let the storytelling guide it, and we have a number of elements to this show. We always discuss how it's a bit of a genre mash-up. It's a character drama; it's an action-adventure; it's a sci-fi show. So, we always try to give our dedicated audience all three of those elements in the storytelling," Clements told Deadline.

"[Co-showrunner] Graeme [Manson] and [co-EP] Aubrey [Nealon] are just very good about making sure that those three narratives are alive, and that's usually how we come to the conclusion of what [a particular] season would be. So, the answer is, we're always chasing something big that can open up the storytelling."

One thing we can definitely predict, the climate change metaphor will continue, after season two's revelation that the world is getting warmer – with the train possibly to blame. We don't expect that one to be resolved via a quick monologue this year, it's too big a topic, so expect that thread to continue.

The season-two finale warned us that there's 'weather ahead.' And it sounds like weather will be a major season-three villain.

"Yes, it is definitely a new character. Climate change is something that Graeme is always discussing, and it's such a strong topic that we all have very strong feelings about. But it's also a difficult topic, because it can paralyze people – everyone wants to help, many are not sure what to do, but it is on everyone's mind," Clements said (via TVLine).

"We need to keep reminding people that we have to take care of our Earth, and how fragile a moment we are in. That's part of it. But also, [weather brings] the idea of hope. We are organisms that are a part of something bigger, and the possibility of the Earth being able to repair itself is hopeful."

Snowpiercer season 3 trailer: When can we see the first footage?

Whoah, time to pull the emergency brake to stop us in our tracks, it's way too early to talk about the first footage from season three.

But, rest assured, as soon as we get access to it, we'll be dropping it in this feature, so do give us a bookmark and keep coming back for updates.
