SOCCER ROUNDUP: Family connections spark Coyotes past Huskies

Wichita Falls High held an impromptu Family Night on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.

Both of Old High’s goals in a 2-0 victory against Hirschi were achieved thanks to the play of two relatives.

The Coyotes’ first goal was scored when Juan Corona set up his brother Marco Corona.

The second was scored by Lupe Anguiano and assisted by Eliseo Anguiano, who are not brothers but related.

Ayden Ramirez got the shutout in goal.

The Coyotes improve to 11-5-2 overall and 3-0 in district. They return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a visit to Mineral Wells.


WFHS GIRLS 12, HIRSCHI 0

Alinessa Salinas and the Wichita Falls High Lady Coyotes continued to put the ball in the net at a prolific rate Tuesday, routing HIrschi, 12-0, in District 4-4A action at Memorial Stadium. The Lady Coyotes (14-1-1, 3-0) remain undefeated in district.

Salinas scored a hat trick, while Marialisa Prieto and Carson Lipscomb each had two goals. Marialisa Papaelias, Brooklyn Amador, Malaysia Larque, Jayden Johnson and Karla Rivera found the net once.

Natalia Salcedo had two assists with Dianabetcy Gutierrez, Yuvania Aranda, Johnson, Emma Fritzsch, Amador and Hallie Wagoner notching one each.

Old High held a 31-1 advantage in shots. Hirschi had no shots on goal.

RIDER BOYS 4, SAGINAW 1

SAGINAW – Hayden Wherry answered a Saginaw goal with one of his own, sparking Rider’s 4-1 victory in District 5-5A action Tuesday at Rough Rider Stadium. The Raiders (7-4-5, 3-2-1) continue their upward trend in the district standings.

Rider took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Rafa Oritz and Wherry. But Saginaw cut the lead in half in the 47th minute.

It only took around six minutes for Wherry to push Rider’s lead back to two goals, and Dylan Munguia added a tally in the match’s final minute for good measure.

Munguia, Ortiz, Henry Pinson and Gage Talley each had an assist.


RIDER GIRLS 4, SAGINAW 0

SAGINAW – Rider recorded its fifth consecutive shutout Tuesday, blanking Saginaw, 4-0, in District 5-5A action at Rough Rider Stadium. The Lady Raiders (15-3-2, 6-0) remain undefeated in district play.

Allie Vasquez and Savannah Skelton have split time in goal for the Rider’s current streak of shutouts.

On Tuesday, the Lady Raiders scored three goals off throw-ins by Kendall Toliver with Mia Gilmore, Ashlynn Knight and Jimena Rodriguez putting the ball in the net from Toliver assists. Gilmore assisted Knight for the Lady Raiders’ other goal.

Rider hosts second-place Aledo at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium.


BURK GIRLS 2, MINERAL WELLS 1

MINERAL WELLS – Burkburnett picked up its first District 4-4A victory Tuesday thanks to a pair of unassisted goals by Meagan Perry late in a 2-1 victory against Mineral Wells. Burkburnett is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in district.

Mineral Wells scored 40 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick. The Lady Rams 1-0 lead held up until Perry connected for a goal with three minutes remaining to play.

Perry scored the game-winner less than a minute later, allowing Burkburnett to steal the win.

Burkburnett coach Patrick Birk also praised the efforts of Zoe Overfield, Nevaeh Garza, Lorelei St. Sauver, Allana Munoz-Price, Autumn Daniel, Marta Martinez-Lopez and Hannah Gruenes.
