SOCCER ROUNDUP: WFHS boys, girls advance to regional quarterfinals

WFHS BOYS 2, EP BOWIE 1

MIDLAND – Wichita Falls High scored two goals in the final nine minutes Friday, lifting the Coyotes to a 2-1 victory against El Paso Bowie in a Region I-4A area-round playoff match at Astound Stadium.

The Coyotes advance to the Region I-4A quarterfinals where they’ll meet El Paso Irvin at 5 p.m. Friday back at Astound Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Bowie got on the board with a goal in the 52nd minute. The Coyotes didn’t tie the game until there was less than nine minutes remaining.

A free kick by Lupe Anguiano appeared to be curling inside the far post but got some help when it bounced off a Bowie player for an own goal.

Eliseo Anguiano had the game-winner, finishing an assist from Fransisco Lugo with 2:30 left in the match.

WFHS coach goalie Ayden Ramirez played a pivotal part in the win, making several critical saves after Bowie went up 1-0.

WFHS GIRLS 4, EP AUSTIN 0

MIDLAND – Jayden Johnson found the net twice, leading Wichita Falls High to a 4-0 victory against El Paso Austin in a Region I-4A area-round match Tuesday at Astound Stadium.

The Lady Coyotes advance to play Canyon West Plains in the Region I-4A quarterfinals Friday in Lubbock.

Lucianna Borrego and Alinessa Salinas each added a goal. Salinas, Borrego, Brooklyn Amador and Maggie Ketner had one assist each.

RIDER GIRLS 3, CENTENNIAL 1

GRAHAM – Mia Gilmore had a part in Rider’s first two goals, which proved to be more than enough in the Lady Raiders’ 3-1 victory against Burleson Centennial in a Region I-5A area-round matchup at Newton Field.

The Lady Raiders (24-3-2) have won 17 straight and advance to play either Midlothian Heritage or Granbury in the regional quarterfinals later this week.

Gilmore set up Rider’s initial goal with a through ball that was finished by Jimena Rodriguez on a breakaway in the fifth minute. Gilmore gave Rider a 2-0 lead, heading the ball into the goal off a Bella Pillow corner kick.

That lead held up through halftime, but Centennial cut it to one with a goal in the 37th minute.

Ashlynn Knight gave Rider an insurance goal in the 50th minute, finishing an assist from Rodriguez.

Rider coach praised the play of freshman midfielder Kamora Johnson and defenders Pillow and Brenna McLoughlin.
