SOCCER ROUNDUP: Salinas scores five goals in Lady Coyotes' rout of Burk

BURKBURNETT – Alinessa Salinas set the program record for goals scored Friday, leading Wichita Falls High to a dominant 11-0 victory against Burkburnett in District 4-4A action at Bulldog Stadium. The Lady Coyotes (13-1-1, 2-0) remain undefeated early in district play.

Salinas had five goals against the Lady Bulldogs, breaking the 26-year-old record of four set by Cameron Goodwin, who scored four goals in a game twice in 1997.

Salinas had two goals in the first half with the Lady Coyotes taking a 3-0 advantage into halftime. The Lady Coyotes scored four goals in a 5:30 span in the second half, mounting a 7-0 lead. Salinas had two more goals during that time and added her fifth in the match’s 58th minute before subbing out for the remainder of the match.

The Lady Coyotes held a 40-3 advantage in shots, including 28-3 with shots on goal.

Jayden Johnson had four assists and two goals. Malaysia Larque added two goals and an assist. Karla Rivera and Marialisa Papelias each scored once.

Papaelias, Hallie Wagoner, Maggie Ketner, Avery Herrer and Jasmine Montgomery each had an assist. Aiden Herrera got the shutout in goal.

The Lady Coyotes next play Hirschi at 5 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.


RIDER BOYS 3, NORTHWEST 1

Rafa Ortiz notched a hat trick, and Rider handed Northwest its first loss in District 5-5A play, 3-1, Friday at Memorial Stadium. The Raiders (6-4-5, 2-2-1) are now an even .500 in district play.

After a scoreless first half, Ortiz opened the scoring by finishing a ball off a Henry Pinson free kick less than three minutes into the second half.

Around seven minutes later, Ortiz benefitted from a ball over the top from Gage Talley, finding the net for a 2-0 lead.

Northwest got within 2-1 in the 60th minute, and goalie Tanner Wells made a big save moments later to preserve the Raiders’ lead.

Ortiz gave the Raiders some breathing room, taking a Hunter Wherry through ball and putting it in the goal.

Rider returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it visits Saginaw.


WFHS BOYS 1, BURKBURNETT 0

BURKBURNETT – in a match where goals were at a premium, Wichita Falls High’s defense played a pivotal role in the Coyotes’ earning a 1-0 victory against Burkburnett in District 4-4A action Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

The lone goal was scored by Cayden Woodard with Juan Corona picking up the assist.

But coach Kyle Redding raved about the Coyotes’ defensive effort, praising the efforts of Corona, Marty Hale and Pat Maldonado along with goalkeeper Ayden Ramirez, who picked up the shutout win,

The Coyotes (10-5-2, 2-0) are back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Hirschi.


RIDER GIRLS 9, NORTHWEST 0

Jimena Rodriguez scored a hat trick, and Rider remained undefeated in District 5-5A action with a 9-0 throttling of Northwest at Memorial Stadium. The Lady Raiders (14-3-2, 5-0) continue to sit alone atop the district standings.

Mia Gilmore scored the Lady Raiders’ initial two goals in the game’s first 20 minutes. The match was put well out of reach when they scored four goals in a three-minute span later in the first half.

Jimena Rodriguez collected her hat trick, and Bella Pillow converted a penalty kick during that time.

Ashlynn Knight added a goal with less than two minutes left in the first half, and Rider took a 7-0 advantage into halftime. Knight and Pillow added goals in the second half.

Kendall Toliver picked up two more assists off throw-ins, and Pillow added two assists. Rodriguez and Henlee Wilson also notched assists.

Rider visits Saginaw at 5 p.m. Tuesday, continuing District 5-5A play.
