Social media reactions come in after UNLV campus shooting
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Not long after initial reports of the shooting on the campus of UNLV started surfacing, individuals began posting reactions and thoughts on social media.
President Joe Biden issued a statement saying, in part, “[…] just hours ago, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas became the latest college campus to be terrorized by a horrific act of gun violence, and the community is still awaiting information on casualties. Jill and I join citizens across our nation in praying for the families of our fallen, and for those who were injured during these latest acts of senseless violence. We are also grateful for the courageous work of law enforcement—who risked their own safety to bring an end to these deadly shooting sprees.”
Vice President Kamala Harris released a statement saying, in part, “Every person in every community across America should have the freedom to live safe from gun violence. But instead, our nation is being torn apart by the fear and trauma of this epidemic. Today, it was another campus of students terrorized while being told to RUN-HIDE-FIGHT as an active shooter opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas – only miles from the site of the deadliest mass shooting in American history. […] Doug and I are mourning those who were killed and praying for the victims and their families. We are grieving for the students and so many more whose lives are forever changed. And we are thinking of the members of law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way to bring these shooting sprees to an end. […]”
The Las Vegas Raiders issued a statement via X, saying: “The Las Vegas Raiders are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at UNLV today. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. We are committed to helping our friends at UNLV and the greater Las Vegas community heal and are grateful for the efforts of our first responders.”
Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman posted a response on X saying: “Tragic and heartbreaking news coming out of @unlv. Praying for everyone on campus as law enforcement responds to the situation.Jill and I join citizens across our nation in praying for the families of our fallen, and for those who were injured during these latest acts of senseless violence. We are also grateful for the courageous work of law enforcement—who risked their own safety to bring an end to these deadly shooting sprees.”
“Our hearts are with the victims of today’s tragic events, and with our entire community,” the Vegas Golden Knights wrote on X. “We pledge our support for all those affected and are eternally grateful to the first responders who serve the valley.”
UNLV head football coach Barry Odom also posted on X, saying simply, “#PrayForUNLV.”
Nevada State University sent out a message, saying, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the recent active shooter incident today at UNLV. Our sincerest condolences go out to UNLV’s students, faculty, staff, and community.”
Our hearts go out to all the Rebels and we will continue to send our support through this difficult time. We will continue to share information as we learn more about this situation.”
Clark County Commission Chairman Jim Gibson said the following: “Our hearts go out to students, faculty, staff and family members of anyone in our community who has been impacted by this violence. Clark County is working with multiple agencies to help coordinate our response to this emergency and we are doing everything we can to assist anyone who has been affected.”
CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara chimed in, saying, “The Clark County School District offers our deepest condolences to the victims and families of this tragedy at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.”
UNLV is a vital part of the Nevada education community, and CCSD stands united with the UNLV community.”
The District has and will continue to deploy resources supporting our UNLV community as needed, including the CCSD Police Department personnel and counselors from our Critical Response Teams.”
During a press conference at the NBA In-Season Tournament, LeBron James spoke about the shooting saying:
“It just back to what I said before about guns in America, it’s such a longer conversation. We are the only ones that keep dealing with this same story, the same conversation every single times it happens, and it just continues to happen. You know, the ability to get a gun, the ability to do these things over and over and over and there’s been no change, it’s literally ridiculous. It makes no sense that we continue to lose innocent lives on campuses, on schools, at shopping markets, and you know movie theaters, and all type of stuff, it’s just ridiculous, it’s ridiculous. The fact that we haven’t changed anything, it’s actually been a lot easier to be able to own a firearm. It’s stupid.”
The Las Vegas Aces posted a statement on X saying, “The Las Vegas Aces are heartbroken over today’s horrific shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this senseless act of violence, and our thanks go out to those first responders and and medical professionals whose actions this afternoon undoubtedly saved lives. As the healing process begins for UNLV’s students, faculty and staff, the Aces stand committed to assist in any way we can.”
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said in a statement, “Reno is sending prayers and love to all those who were affected by this terrible tragedy. I echo all of our state’s leaders when I say that my heart and prayers go out to the victims and their families and friends who have been impacted by this shocking incident. In accordance with the Presidential proclamation, all flags in the City of Reno will be flown at half-staff through sunset on Friday as we mourn together as a community.”
Archbishop George Leo Thomas issued a statement saying, “Today, I am holding close those who have been affected by the shooting on the University of Nevada Las Vegas Campus. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the survivors of this tragedy.
May the embrace of the Lord, compassionately hold and console those who are suffering. May his comforting presence bring solace and strength to their hearts, granting them the grace to face their challenges with hope and resilience.”
Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto posted on X saying, “I’m devastated to see our home of Las Vegas once again hurting from a violent shooting. Paul and I are keeping UNLV in our hearts, and we will pray for the victims’ families. I’m grateful to
@LVMPD, campus police, and all first responders who worked so quickly to save lives.”

“This afternoon, just a few hours before the National Vigil for Victims of Gun Violence in DC, we learned of another shooting at a college campus in Nevada. We don’t have to live this way. Students shouldn’t have to live in fear while seeking an education. My heart breaks for the UNLV community. Our leaders need to act against gun violence.”
MGM Resorts CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle said “UNLV has long been the heart of our community. Many of us have deep ties to the university, and as a proud graduate myself, my heart breaks for the victims, their families and the entire Rebel community. Today and always, we stand with our UNLV family and are grateful to the first responders who once again acted so quickly and bravely,” in a statement on X.
