Sod Poodles travel to Midland following split series with Springfield

·6 min read

The Amarillo Sod Poodles are hitting the road and heading south to take on the Midland RockHounds this week for their fifth head-to-head series of the year.

The Soddies have not won a series since taking two in a three-game battle against Midland from July 22-24. Amarillo did bounce back last week to split its six-game series against a talented Springfield roster following a one-win week against Frisco.

Amarillo outfielder Roby Enriquez has reached base safely in 28 straight games heading into the new week and has recorded a hit in three straight games after having his 20-game streak snapped last Wednesday. Since his promotion to Double-A in late May, Enriquez has gone 66-for-189 (.349) with five home runs, 40 RBI, 30 runs scored and 12 doubles.

Catcher/first baseman Andy Yerzy has hit three home runs in the past four games and fans should look out for him this week as he continues to work himself into a hot streak.

Arizona's No. 3 prospect Blake Walston has a 6.13 ERA through 15 starts this season and has 81 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched.

Amarillo now owns an 51-57 overall record and is scheduled to face off against Midland — the affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.

Midland (56-52) enters the new week coming off of a 3-3 road trip against the Tulsa Drillers.

The Athletics have four top 10 prospects that are currently playing for Midland in first baseman/catcher Tyler Soderstrom (No. 2), third baseman Zack Gelof (No. 4), and right-handed pitchers Luis Medina (No. 7) and J.T. Ginn (No. 8).

Soderstrom was drafted in the first round (26th overall) of the 2020 Draft by Oakland and has had a rough showing at the plate so far in 10 games for the RockHounds. The 20-year-old has gone 8-for-42 (.190) with one home run, six RBI and two runs scored.

Gelof has been terrific at the plate this season and is batting .292 with eight home runs, 43 RBI and 34 runs scored.

On the mound, Medina is 1-1 with an 11.57 ERA in two starts while Ginn is 0-2 with an 5.11 ERA in seven starts.

Midland is in third place in the Texas League South Division, while the Sod Poodles are sitting fourth.

Amarillo is 22-29 on the road this season while the RockHounds have gone 27-24 at home.
