Softball recap: Offensive surge powers Brewer, Aledo; Boswell, Heritage, Carroll advance

Boswell 14, Odessa 4 (6)

Three players drove in three runs as the Pioneers, who won 5-2 on Friday, completed the sweep to clinch the Class 6A area round series Saturday in Abilene.

Boswell advances to the Region 1 quarterfinals vs. El Paso Americas, a 2-0 winner over Timber Creek.

Odessa, looking to force a Game 3, started off with a 2-0 lead until Kynley Menchaca doubled in two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Emma Robertson doubled in a run and later scored to extend the Boswell lead to 4-2 in the third.

The Pioneers tacked on five runs with two outs in the fourth. Byrdie Skipper singled in a pair of runs and was followed by a Robertson RBI single to left. Rayna Sadler capped off the inning with a two-run double to right.

Boswell added five in the sixth to end the game via run-rule. Skipper and Robertson added RBI singles and Katy McGowan scored on a passed ball for the final run.

Southlake Carroll 6, Midland 2 (8)

Southlake Carroll 4, Midland 1

Cameron Timmons pitched 15 innings in back-to-back games Saturday to propel the Dragons to wins in Game 2 and 3, clinching their Class 6A area round series in Southlake.

The Dragons advance to the Region 1 quarterfinals to play Abilene, which beat Euless Trinity on Friday.

Mackenzie Rae (RBI triple) and Anna Hunt (RBI single) drove in a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning of Game 3. Brooke Berwick hit a two-run triple. All three players had two hits.

Timmons went seven allowing six hits with six strikeouts.

Carroll opened Saturday’s doubleheader with an extra inning victory after dropping Game 1, 1-0 on Friday. Trailing 1-0 after five, Lillian Cooper homered to tie the game in the sixth.

The Dragons tacked on five in the top of the eighth with RBIs from Rae and Berwich and two bases loaded walks. Timmons went all eight allowing six hits and two unearned runs.

Colleyville Heritage 11, Mansfield Legacy 1 (6)

The Panthers run-ruled the Broncos in back-to-back days to clinch the Class 5A area round series Saturday in Colleyville. They advance to the Region 1 quarters to play the winner of Aledo and Burleson Centennial. Game 3 of that series is Monday in Cleburne.

CHHS, which won 13-2 on Friday, poured in eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers didn’t score again until three runs in the sixth ended the contest.

Alexis Perales, Nia Sisneros and DeNae Vasquez Dickson combined for three doubles, five RBIs and five of the team’s nine hits. Leah Perales and Jalie Neff both went 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Olivia Ringo and Karine Morrison added one RBI apiece.

Leah Perales and Neff both hit RBI singles to left field in the sixth and Perales scored the final run. Presleigh Payne pitched all six innings allowing six hits.

Lindsey McConnell, Payne, Ringo and Sisneros all homered in Game 1.

Brewer 15, FW Arlington Heights 9

The Bears registered 14 extra base hits and six home runs, including five on Saturday in Game 2 to complete the sweep over the Yellow Jackets in their Class 5A area round series in Weatherford.

Brewer advances to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2014 and will play Justin Northwest.

Sydney Carithers, Kaymie Chandler, Karlie Landrum, Mia Serrato and Kelsey Valo all went yard in Game 2 to help turn a 6-2 deficit in the fourth into a 15-9 lead after six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Valo also doubled and finished with three RBIs. She drove in seven runs in Game 1.

Landrum and Serrato also drove in three runs Saturday. Blair Shipman added one RBI.

Aledo 20, Burleson Centennial 7

After dropping Game 1 on Friday, 7-6 in 13 innings, the Ladycats came back Saturday and scored 20 runs on 24 hits to tie their Class 5A area round series with the Spartans.

Game 3 is 6:30 pm at Cleburne.

Aledo scored at least four runs in four different innings, including six in the second and five in the seventh. Five players had at least three hits, led by Presley Hull and Marissa Powell, who both went 4 for 5 and combined for five RBIs and sevens scored. Hull was a triple shy of the cycle, hitting a two-run homer to make it 10-4 in the second. Her double drove in Claire Byars for a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Texas Ray had a team-high four RBIs and Byars and Morgan Brown each drove in three.

Macy Graf and Madysen Boutwell both went 3 for 3 for Aledo.

Centennial hit three homers, Kylie Barnes, Halie DeLaRosa and Reese Whiteley, who led the Spartans with three RBIs. DeLaRosa went 3 for 4.
