SoLace Brigade Scrubs and Apparel recently had a soft opening at 529 Main St. in the Thompson Duplet. A grand opening is set for later this spring. It's owned by lifelong friends Lacey McCombs and Somer Stanton.

The shop will sell a variety of scrub tops, bottoms and accessories ranging from compression socks and caps to stethoscopes and watches for those in the medical field. It will also have uniforms for local first responders, like police, firefighters and paramedics. Something not carried in shop can be ordered. Offered lines include Carhartt, Skechers and Grey's Anatomy, officially licensed from the television series.

McCombs said she had the idea of opening a scrubs store for years. She eventually found out Stanton had the same thought. Both said those in need of such clothes would need to travel out of town to bigger cities, like Zanesville and New Philadelphia.

"I get stopped daily and asked when we're opening. There's so much excitement about this shop," McCombs said. "We've received overwhelming community support. This community has been outstanding and it makes us feel even better about this and being able to support them back."

They're also thrilled to be located on Main Street, which they know is on an upswing. There are many newer businesses around them, including Crystal Aquarium on the other side of the duplet.

"That's what drove us to Main Street, because it's starting to boom," McCombs said.

McCombs is a nurse and Stanton is a dental assistant. Both served in the U.S. Army with tours in Iraq. SoLace is combining their first names and brigade links to their military background. Veterans will be offered 10% discounts.

"We really appreciate the military life we had and our fellow veterans," Stanton said. "It's important to us. We're proud of that. Why wouldn't you be, I guess."

Future plans includes carrying clothes and shoes for restaurant workers, hair stylists and just about any blue-collar job with some kind of uniform. They also want to start buying gently used scrubs for store credit or percent off purchases with proceeds from the those sales going to local non-profit organizations.

Another possible future could be sports equipment and uniforms as well, to be carried on a seasonal basis. Spirit scrub tops featuring logos of the Coshocton, River View and Ridgewood school districts will be added.
