Solano deputies clear out homeless camp near Davis, determine it public health ‘hazard’
Solano county deputies said Wednesday that they and other law enforcement agencies cleared out an illegal homeless encampment last week near Davis.
The Solano County Sheriff’s Office said the encampment, near Interstate 80 and Hamel Lane a block south of Davis’ city limits, was cleared from Aug. 28 through Sept. 1, and 510 cubic yards of garbage was removed. Forty-five 50-gallon bins of human biological contaminants were also collected and disposed of, authorities said.
“The camp was determined to be a hazard to public health and a clean-up notice was posted at the location for the safety and well-being of the public,” deputies said in a social media post Wednesday.
Deputies said, in a two-year span, the camp has had over a dozen residents, some of whom have worked with Solano County homeless intervention services.
Three remaining residents vacated the property prior to the cleanup and refused services from Solano County, deputies said.
The Sheriff’s Office said it worked with California Highway Patrol, the UC Davis Police Department, Union Pacific railroad officials, Solano County Health and Social Services and Solano County Behavioral Health to assist camp residents, clean and restore the property. The University of California, Davis, sits roughly one mile west of the site.
