Solid waste services in Fresno might go up: what can you do?

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The City of Fresno is proposing to raise rates for solid waste services and they will be holding community meetings to hear feedback for the proposed price hikes.

The city officials say they have not increased their rates in 15 years.

According to the city’s website, they are proposing that the 96-gallon solid waste service level for the green waste organics, trash, and recycling will be going up from $25.37 to $30.87 by 2025. The 64-gallon carts for green waste, organics, and recycling will go from $19.20 to $28.12.

There will be price hikes for the gray 64-gallon, 96-gallon trash cart, the blue 96-gallon recycling cart, and the green 96-gallon organics cart.

City officials say that there are two options to protest the proposed rate update. They say that the city mailed out a protest card with notices to customers, who can simply fill it out and return the card to the city in a prepaid reply envelope provided in the notice.

The second thing is to submit an alternate written protest, but the city says it will only be counted if it includes the following components:

  • States the submitter’s intention to protest the residential solid waste rate update.

  • Identifies the APN, street address, or utility account number(s) of the parcel concerning which the protest is being made.

  • Includes the name of the record owner or tenant ratepayer who is submitting the protest.

  • Includes the original signature of the record owner or tenant ratepayer who is submitting the protest.

Officials say all protest cards and alternate written protests must be received by the City Clerk’s Office at 2600 Fresno St., Fresno, by 5 p.m. on May 2, or submitted before the close of the public hearing.

For those wanting to learn more about the proposed price hikes, there will be a series of meetings that will be held in March and April. One was held on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the City Hall, Council Chambers located at 2600 Fresno St.

The next one will be on Thursday, March 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Maxie L. Parks Community Center 1802 E California Ave.

Those interested in the next meeting times can look at the City of Fresno’s website.
