Quality child care is expensive and, for some families, in increasingly short supply or even inaccessible.
Nationally, the average cost of child care runs about $10,000 per year and eats up between 10% and 35% of household income for a typical family, according to Child Care Aware of America, a child care research and advocacy organization.
South Carolina fares better than many states in its availability of child care, but a 2019 child care gaps assessment by the Bipartisan Policy Center found there were still more than 36,000 children in the state who potentially need care but whose families could not reasonably access it by driving.
