Somers: A football game will be played Sunday in Glendale. Finally

Football will be played Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, a fact that was easy to overlook the previous six days or so as our attention often was diverted from the shiny Lombardi Trophy that will go to the winner of Super Bowl 57.

The buildup to the NFL’s biggest game is always long. There’s a reason we call America’s unofficial national holiday “Super Bowl Week” and not “Super Bowl Day.” The overwhelming number of press conferences, activities, celebrity appearances and parties barely fit into seven days, much less one.

But this Super Bowl week was especially exhausting for Valley sports fans. So much happened during the week that it sometimes obscured a football game would be played at the end of it.

To review:

—Early in the week, there were reports the Suns were trying to trade for Nets guard Kyrie Irving, who ended up in Dallas.

—The Cardinals continued to search for a replacement for coach Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired nearly five weeks ago. That’s longer than any of the coaching searches they’ve conducted since moving to Arizona 35 years ago.

—A guy climbed to the top of the 483-foot Chase Tower in downtown Phoenix on Tuesday, aided only by his arms and legs, of which he had two apiece. He was arrested, and charged with criminal trespass, burglary and one count of offenses against the public order. He was released Wednesday after posting a $500 bond.

—Wednesday night, news broke that the Suns were trading for Nets forward Kevin Durant, one of the best players in NBA history. The price tag was hefty. Forwards Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson are now looking for accommodations in New York, and the Nets also received four draft picks from the Suns.

—On Thursday, play began in the WM Phoenix Open, which itself is a mini-Super Bowl event.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Roger Goodell held his annual Super Bowl press conference on Wednesday, and reassured everyone, again, that the NFL cares about diversity, even though its hiring practices often suggest otherwise.

“The week’s not over yet,” former Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald said, laughing. “You forgot to mention LeBron James breaking the (NBA) scoring record. It has been a really interesting week so far.”

The Valley appeared to handle the world descending up on it, and sports news centering around it, without much problem. That’s not a surprise. Our sports teams might not win championships — the Suns, Diamondbacks, Cardinals and Coyotes have brought Arizona one championship — but we’re pretty good at hosting them.

Athletes and other celebrities came to town to hobnob and to sell us things.  Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith extolled the virtues of Bounty paper towels. Former Patriots and Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski made an appearance for a sports book and a line of dress shoes. Fitzgerald made the rounds at the media center and NFL Experience on behalf of Madden NFL, the video game.

Oh, and coaches and players for the two teams in Super Bowl 57, the Chiefs and Eagles, met with media four days, Monday through Thursday.

While our concentration has bounced between football, golf, basketball and free climbing, theirs has always been on the game scheduled to kick off at around 4:30 p.m.

This is the Chiefs' third Super Bowl appearance in four years. They won Super Bowl 54 and lost 55.

“Every team is different every year,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “This group here is a bunch of young guys who stepped up to the plate, with some guidance of veteran players.”

The key to winning?

“You have to play well,” Reid said. “These are the two best teams in the National Football League.”

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid arrive for the Super Bowl 57 opening night on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, in Phoenix. The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 12.

You could argue that, but you would lose. Both teams have records of 16-3. Both have scored 546 points this season. Both are the No. 1 seeds in their conferences. Both beat the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium this season. And the winner Sunday will finish the season with more wins in Glendale this season than the Cardinals, who won just once at home.

In recent years, players and coaches of Super Bowl teams have successfully avoided saying or doing silly or dumb things during Super Bowl week. The Eagles and Chiefs followed suit.

There were no controversies this week, unless someone was offended by Reid proclaiming a chile relleno burrito as his favorite Mexican food.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni had nothing but praise for Reid, even though Reid declined to retain Sirianni when he became Kansas City’s coach in 2013. Sirianni was the receivers coach under the previous staff and admits he was hurt a bit when Reid informed him that he was hiring someone else.

He was also asked if it was a “must win” game, and Sirianni assured everyone the Eagles are intent on winning the football game that will be played Sunday in Glendale. Finally.
