Somers nonprofits awarded grants

Jan. 24—SOMERS — The Somers Greater Together Community Fund has awarded $32,993 to local nonprofits that are addressing issues in town, including outdoor recreation, youth activities, and safety.

Somers Little League received $10,000 to install a well and sprinkler system that will allow irrigation of the playing fields behind Town Hall and restore them back to a safe condition.

The Scantic River Watershed Association was granted $5,493 for students to work with an aquatic scientist and learn about the river and various water-monitoring techniques.

Somers Recreation and Leisure Services was awarded $7,000 to install a disc golf course at Field Road Park.

Somers Youth Services received $5,000 to buy games and equipment for the new youth after-school drop-in center.

The Somers Fire Department secured $3,000 to buy heated automated external defibrillator cabinets to install public access AEDs at Field Road Park behind Town Hall.

Somers SafeGrad received $2,500 to support an alcohol-free event on graduation night for the high school's 2023 senior class.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is a community foundation for Hartford and 28 surrounding towns. The foundation has awarded more than $837 million in grants since its founding in 1925.

The Somers Greater Together Community Fund was established in 2019 by the Hartford Foundation for Giving to support residents who identify needs in the community, encourage broad and inclusive civic engagement.

The fund is overseen by the Somers Community Fund Advisory Committee.

The Somers Greater Together program provides the opportunity for organizations and individuals to make tax-deductible contributions in support of town needs.
