Somerset cannabis dispensary Solar Therapeutics plans 4/20 celebration — what to expect

SOMERSET — Local dispensary Solar Therapeutics plans to celebrate 4/20 with an event that will feature live music for patrons and vendors offering samples of THC-free products.

“It’s the biggest day of the industry. Sales are always super, super high, foot traffic is always high, no pun intended,” said Derek Gould, Director of Marketing & Communications for the company.

On Wednesday, April 20, the dispensary will host singer/guitarist Marcus Rezak, Gloucester-based band Over the Bridge and DJ Josh West between noon and 6 p. Vendors will be on site offering things like swag and non-medicated gummies that would typically contain THC.

Last September, Solar Therapeutics sponsored the Cultivator’s Cup, a two-day cannabis competition and music festival, after a lengthy process to obtain a temporary entertainment process for the event. At the time, selectmen raised concerns about the event’s safety plan and whether having that many people, including some under the influence of cannabis, in attendance would create a dangerous situation.

But September’s festival, which was permitted for up to 2,000 people, went on without any serious problems, with Somerset police reporting no arrests the weekend of the event.

On Wednesday, April 13, the selectmen voted to green light a temporary entertainment license for the 4/20 event, with little discussion except for selectman Allen Smith suggesting the organizers get permission from the owners of the nearby shopping center to use their parking lot for overflow parking.

Chair Lorne Lawless said the town’s police and fire chief gave input on approving the license and that the building inspector has visited the site. The Somerset Police Department will provide a traffic detail.

Gould said Wednesday’s event will be on a much smaller scale than last year’s event. Musical acts will take place in the parking lot adjacent to the dispensary, not in the large clearing nearby where the music festival was held.

No food or beverages will be served, and Gould stressed that there will be no on-site consumption of cannabis.

“It’s just a day to kind of celebrate and listen to music,” he said.
