Somerset County Foundation for Higher Education awards $31,000 in scholarships

The Somerset County Foundation for Higher Education awarded $31,358.52 in scholarships to Somerset County residents enrolled in the Pennsylvania Western University-Clarion, Somerset Site’s Associate of Science in Nursing Program, in partnership with Pennsylvania Highland’s Community College in Somerset for general education courses.

For the fall semester, 65 nursing scholarships were awarded to students by the Foundation. Suzanne Funa, executive director, said, “It is exciting to offer more scholarships every year from the Foundation and our donors to Somerset County residents educating themselves to become Registered Nurses. The support is greatly appreciated by the Penn West-Clarion, Somerset students.”

These scholarships were from private scholarship funds provided by The Foundation Board; Donald and Linda Fetterolf; Joan Wheeler; The Davies Family; The Cook Family; The Maust Family; UPMC-Somerset Hospital; Carl Kahl; Susan Mapes Memorial; David C. Neal Memorial; Margaret Peggy Ogle Memorial; John H. Walker Memorial; “JFK” Round Table; Somerset County Campus Nursing; Somerset County Registered Nurses Association; and the 1889 Foundation Scholarship funds.

The Somerset County Foundation for Higher Education, with support from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies (CFA), was made possible through the Alan L. and Lana J. Miller Family Fund, Meyersdale Wind Farm Fund, Robert Waters Economic Development Fund, Somerset County Community Fund and Somerset County Community Fund-UPMC. Thirteen first-year students enrolled in the Penn West-Clarion, Somerset Site’s Associate of Science in Nursing Degree received a $461.54 scholarship to assist with essential start-up expenses associated with a nursing program.

The recipients of scholarships in the first-year class are: Alyssa Boyles, Alivia Coughenour, Hailey Dewitt, Samantha Fama, Riley Hay, Danielle Hoke, Spencer Marteeny, Madison Nemeth, Aleigha Reiber, Darsea Robertson, Rayne Stoltzfus, Jordan Willison and Ella Witt. Award recipients in their second year are: Emily Brick, Cassie Fisher, Grace Harrity, Zoey Hayman, Kayla Maust, Keri Pritts, Courtney Smith, Paige Stutzman, Tiffany Weigle and Justin Willkow.

“The Somerset County Foundation for Higher Education would like to thank all of the donors for another great year in financially assisting our Somerset County residents in achieving their career dreams of becoming registered nurses. The Foundation is very pleased to work with individuals, businesses and organizations to assist students with this exciting and beneficial opportunity with a high-quality university. Pennsylvania Western University-Clarion, Somerset Site’s location offers state-of-the-art technology and hands-on training with nursing simulators in the Wheeler Family Nursing Simulation Lab located at the Somerset County Education Center,” said Funa.
