Custer, Fox at Exchange Club

Avery Custer and Ian Fox were selected to represent Shanksville-Stonycreek High School at the Somerset Exchange Club.

Avery Custer, daughter of Doug and Lynda Beth Custer, is a senior at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School. She is a member of the school tennis team, student council, National Honor Society, and the reading competition team. She is a past member of scholastic quiz, forensics, SADD and chorus. In her free time, Custer enjoys reading and volunteering at the Somerset Historical Center, her church and Laurel View Village.

After graduating from high school, she will be attending college to receive a master’s degree in the Physician Assistant program.

Ian Fox is also a senior at Shanksville, where he is in scholastic quiz, SADD, yearbook, PTSA, golf, basketball, baseball and is president of National Honor Society. Outside of school, Fox is an avid outdoorsman. He plays in the Johnstown City League and plans to play in the JCBL this summer. He has worked at the Lincoln Cafe for two summers as a sous-chef.

For his future plans, Fox plans to attend the United States Military Academy or enroll in ROTC.

Barlow, Grove at Exchange Club

Abigail Barlow and Kate Grove were chosen to represent Turkeyfoot Valley High School at the Somerset Exchange Club as students of the month.

Abigail Barlow is the daughter of Bill Barlow, Confluence, and Megan Barlow, Fort Hill. At Turkeyfoot she is president of the theater group, chorus, student council treasurer, prom committee, class treasurer, National Honor Society treasurer and music program president. She is a member of Buffalo Creek 4-H Club, Somerset County 4-H Exchange Club and Addison Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary secretary. Barlow plans to attend a four-year university for a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in health studies and/or biochemistry before going to medical school and specializing in emergency medicine.

Kate Grove, is the daughter of Terry and Kara Grove, Addison. Her extracurricular activities include: President of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), president of the National Honor Society, secretary of student council, Confluence Lions Club October Student of the Month, and vice president of her senior class. Grove is the catcher for Turkeyfoot’s softball team and is involved in weightlifting.

She works at Mitch’s Fuel and Food. Outside of school, Grove enjoys hunting, fishing and working out. After high school, she plans to attend college.

Cram-A-Van

The Salisbury-Elk Lick Education Association is holding its annual “Cram-a-Van” Toy Drive from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Dec. 1. They ask for donations of new, unwrapped toys and gift cards for children, newborn through 18 years of age. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

The official drop-off date is Dec. 1, however, toys may be dropped off at the school prior to that date. The Salisbury-Elk Lick Education Association works in conjunction with the Salisbury Family Center to distribute gifts to families in the area.

Mish at Boswell Lions Club

Mariellen Mish, a senior at North Star High School, was selected as the Boswell Lions senior of the month for November.

Mish is the daughter of Karen Mish-Nicklow, Boswell. She is an honors and dual enrollment student. She is senior class president, plays varsity basketball, and is on the video news team, yearbook, Podcast Club, Art Club, formatting chief of the school newspaper and Community Arts Club. Mish volunteers at Camp PARC, works at Martella's and Jennerstown Speedway. She also takes photos for different community events.

After graduation, Mish plans to attend IUP for a degree in graphic design.

Rosman at Somerset Kiwanis

Mia Angelina Rosman has been selected to represent Somerset Area High School at the Kiwanis Club of Somerset for November.

Rosman is the daughter of Joshua and Stacey Rosman, Somerset. She is enrolled in the AP/Honors course. She participates in varsity tennis, varsity basketball, French Club, Interact Club, student council, SADD, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, orchestra, choir, musical and yearbook. Rosman is the French Club vice president, Interact Club public relations, yearbook editor and tennis team captain. She has been listed on the highest honor roll. She is a three-time varsity girls tennis doubles District 5 Champion and state qualifier, a two-time varsity girls tennis team District 5 Champion and state qualifier and a two-time district orchestra qualifier.

Rosman is president of the New Centerville Church of God youth group. After graduation she plans to attend a four-year university. She enjoys hanging out with friends, shopping and traveling.

Hayman honored by Soroptimists

Samantha Jo Hayman, a student at Berlin Brothersvalley High School, has been selected as the Soroptimist International of Somerset County student of the month.

Soroptimist International is the world's largest service organization for women. The mission of the group is to improve the lives of girls and women in local communities and throughout the world. It recognizes one junior girl from each of the county school districts, who is outstanding for her volunteer work in her school and community.

Hayman is the daughter of Jonathan and Holly Hayman, Berlin. She is enrolled in the college preparatory course at Berlin. She is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity cheerleaders, rifle team, volleyball team, chorus, high school musicals, student council representative, Leo Club and For Club.

She received the Somerset County Junior Outstanding 4-H member award and received the Diamond Clover in 4-H, which is the sixth and final level in 4-H. Hayman is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Milksquirts 4-H Club, Somerset County 4-H County Council, Somerset 4-H Exchange Club and she is a member of the Pennsylvania Club Livestock Association.

Hayman enjoys volunteering her time, especially when it comes to working with younger children. She volunteers every day with the kindergarten class at Berlin. Every year she participates in the Ag Literature Week for 4-H and reads and educates the second grade classes. She enjoys being a 4-H camp counselor over the summer and a volunteer at the day camps.

Hayman said she enjoys mentoring younger 4-H members with their livestock projects as well. She has volunteered her time at the Somerset County Fair with the bake sale each year and the painting of the Dairy Bar at the fairgrounds. She said her greatest experience volunteering came this summer with organizing and running a community blood drive in memory of her older brother, Lucas. Her hobbies include raising and showing livestock across the state. She loves to dance, especially tap dancing. She also enjoys playing the piano, hunting and archery.

After graduating from high school, Hayman hopes to attend college to become an anesthesiologist.
