Huang at Jaycees

Alven Huang is the Somerset Jaycees student of the month for November. Huang is the son of SuQing Wong and JiQiang Huang, Somerset. He is a senior honors student at Somerset Area High School.

Huang is on the tennis team, a member of FBLA and in the National Honor Society. He is a state qualifier for FBLA. Outside of school he works at Hazelbaker's Boat Rentals at Laurel Hill State Park during the summer. He plans to apply to Penn State to study computer science after he graduates from Somerset.

Huang enjoys sports and games.

Sechler is Elks student

The Meyersdale Elks Lodge chose Gracyn Sechler as its September student of the month.

Sechler is a senior at Berlin Brothersvalley High School where she is president of the National Honor Society, student council, Class of 2023 and Spanish Club. She is a member of the FCA and Friends of Rachel Club. Sechler participates in varsity soccer, basketball and track. In 2021-22, Sechler was named second team all county for soccer, WestPAC 400meter champion and first team all county in basketball.

Outside of school she is a part of Alive Student Ministries and Women & Waffles. In the summer she works at the Ice Cream Station. In her free time she enjoys hiking, reading novels, hanging out with friends and lifting with her siblings.

Lowry, Walker are Exchange Club students

Nyla Lowry and Shandi Walker were selected to represent Somerset Area High School as students of the month at the Somerset Exchange Club.

Nyla Lowry, a senior, is treasurer of French Honor Society, a member of National Honor Society, Interact Club, Health Science Club, French Club and Mu Alpha Theta. She is a volunteer at the Somerset County Library as well as works at Great Day Juice Co.Lowry plans to attend a four year university to study molecular biology. She loves reading and listening to music.

Shandi Walker is the daughter of Shawn and Tammy Walker. She is a senior at Somerset Area High School, where she is enrolled in the honors and AP educational courses. Throughout high school, she has maintained highest honors every quarter and a GPA above 4.0.

Walker is treasurer of Interact Club and student council. She is a member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, French Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Health Sciences Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and The Fleet of Fear.

Outside of the classroom, Walker plays girls volleyball and basketball. Her biggest accomplishment is claiming LHAC gold this season for volleyball. She is employed at Somerset Trust Co., where she works in the consumer lending department. After graduating in the spring, Walker will be attending a 4-year university to major in nursing. Her future career will be centered in the medical field as a nurse anesthetist.

She is a member of Saint Thomas Lutheran Church. Walker's hobbies include traveling, camping, crafting, spending time with friends and family, and volunteering.

North Star Middle School students of the month

Buss at Lions Club

Claire Elizabeth Buss has been selected to be the Somerset Lions Club student of the month for November.

Buss is the daughter of Peter and Jennifer Buss of Somerset. She is a senior honors student at Somerset Area High School. She participates in Interact Club, Spanish Club, district orchestra, and is in the Spanish teaching program where on Tuesdays and Thursdays she goes to Eagle View Elementary School to teach a Spanish program that she designed. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society.

In the summer of 2021, Buss volunteered in a summer lunch program through the Interact Club. She works during the summer at Hazelbaker's in Laurel Hill State Park.

After high school, Buss plans to attend a four year college to pursue a degree in science education. She enjoys baking, cooking, hiking and kayaking.
