Somerset County students do outstanding work

Petrosky at Jaycees

Mariya Grace Petrosky was selected to represent Somerset Area High School at the Somerset Jaycees in December. She is the daughter of Marty and Heidi Petrosky, Somerset.

Petrosky is enrolled in the honors/AP course at Somerset. She participates in girls varsity soccer, girls varsity track, chorus and ensemble, musical, student council, English Club, French Club, French Honor Society and National Honor Society. She is the English Club and French Club secretary. She was selected the Poetry Out Loud local winner, as soccer captain and all county winner, and track District/LHAC participant. Petrosky is also a member of PA West and Turfside Soccer.

Her future plans are to attend a university to further her education in communications and marketing.

Petrosky enjoys reading, ice skating and working at Hazelbaker's Boat Rental.

Dranzik at Boswell Lions

Benjamin Dranzik was selected to represent North Star High School at the Boswell Lions Club in January. He is the son of Martha Dranzik and the late Kenneth Dranzik, Somerset.

Dranzik is a 12th grade honors student who also attends UPJ. He is the manager for the boys basketball team and a member of Mu Alpha Theta. He is a meber of the Boy Scouts, Emmanuel Student Ministry and Crossroads Youth Ministry. He attends Emmanual Church.

Dranzik plans to attend a university for secondary mathematics education.

January Teacher's Choice Award

North Star School District selected its January Teacher's Choice Award winners. They are Jadyn Raley, Jillian Donia, Mason Bussard and Eli Hostetler.

Jadyn Raley is the daughter of Jeff Raley and Jessica Raley Acosta. She is a 12th grade college prep student who also attends the Somerset County Technology Center to study cosmetology. Jillian Donia is the daughter of Amy Donia and Angelo Donia, Stoystown. She is an 11th grade honors student who participates in Forensics, competitive dance and also attends the Somerset County Technology Center to study cosmetology.

Mason Bussard is the son of Tammy Miller and Darwin Miller, Boswell. He is a 10th grade college prep student who also attends Somerset County Technology Center to study machine shop. Eli Hostetler is the son of Melissa and Josh Hostetler Boswell. He is a ninth grade college prep student.

Housley at Rotary

Luke Harrison Housley, son of Bill and Suzy Housley, Friedens, was selected as the Rotary Club of Somerset student of the month for January. Housley is an honors and college prep student at Somerset Area High School.

His extra-curricular activities include varsity basketball, varsity golf, varsity track and field, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and Fleet of Fear. He is the Future Business Leaders of America vice president. He's received varsity letters in basketball, track and field, and golf. Housley is a member of the National Business Honor Society, FBLA regional winner and state qualifier.

Housley is a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and participates in the youth group. He plans to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania and major in marketing.

His hobbies include golfing, playing basketball, lifting weights and hanging out with family and friends.

Elks honor Gross

The Meyersdale Elks Lodge has chosen Shanksville student Jadeyn Gross for the December student of the month.

Gross, 17, of Friedens, is the daughter of Cary and Heidi Gross. She is a senior at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School where she is vice president of her class. Her extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, student council where she is treasurer, SADD and yearbook. She is in her fourth year of volleyball and is representing Shanksviille on the new co-op team with the Shade Panthers where they are currently undefeated.

When not on the volleyball court, Gross enjoys spending time with friends and family and she can be found cheering on the Berlin Mountaineers football team because they are another coop team of Shanksville. She is a member of the Unity United Church of Christ, Berlin.

After high school, Gross plans to attend a four-year college.

Soroptimists honor Dzurko

The Soroptimist International of Somerset County has honored Windber Area High School student Hailey Dzurko. She is the daughter of Dave and Jackie Dzurko, Windber. She is enrolled in the honors program and college course. Her extra-curricular activities include Yearbook Club, SADD Club, Technology Student Association (TSA), TSA Honor Society, PBIS Team, student council and Art Club.

Dzurko is the junior class president and president of TSA. She is a TSA state champion in photographic technology and a TSA national finalist. She received the Capt. Thomas Reagan Award.

Outside organizations in which Dzurko participates include: Art Walk in the Park, CSSMC Color Me Pink Run, Cuddles for Kids, Camp PARC and St. Anthony of Padua Church. She is an event photographer for multiple events around the community. She volunteered to set up and assist with Camp PARC and Cuddles for Kids activities and helps with the church community service projects.

After high school, Dzurko plans to attend a four year college and major in communications/digital media. She enjoys dance, photography, videography, and spending time with family and friends.

Meyersdale elementary registration

The Meyersdale Area Elementary School, 1345 Shaw Mines Road, Meyersdale, has opened registration for children who will be eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. Call the elementary school office at 814-634-8313, Extension 3, if you have a child who will be 5 before Sept. 1, and wish to send him/her to kindergarten this fall. If your child is not enrolled in kindergarten this year, but will be 6 before Sept. 1, call to register him/her for kindergarten or first grade. In Pennsylvania, a child who has attained the age of 6 on or before Sept. 1, must enroll and attend school.

Information regarding the Kindergarten Readiness Orientation and Kindergarten Screening process will be provided at a later date, to those families that have registered with the elementary office.
