Stoppe, Chapman at Exchange Club

Hannah Stoppe and Hailee Chapman were selected to represent Shade-Central City High School at the Somerset Exchange Club.

Hannah Stoppe is the daughter of William E. Stoppe and Holly Pietz. She is historian of the National Honor Society, vice president of student council, president of the yearbook committee, and a member of Shade chorus. Apart from her extracurricular activities, Stoppe enjoys drawing, writing, listening to music, and hanging out with her family and friends.

Upon graduation, she plans to attend the Cook Honors College and the Eberly School of Business through IUP to obtain a degree in marketing, with a minor in professional writing. She also hopes to eventually obtain a certificate in graphic design.

Hailee Chapman is the daughter of Tim and Shannon Chapman. She is secretary of the yearbookcommittee and student council, president of National Honor Society, a member of Varsity Club. She plays volleyball and basketball.

When she is not participating in these extracurricular activities, Chapman enjoys listening to music, reading, and hanging out with friends and family. After graduation, she plans to attend Mount Aloysius College to major in nursing.

Boswell Jaycees athletes

Nicole Rininger and Dominic Hanik were selected as the Boswell Jaycees December athlete of the month from North Star High School. Rininger is the daughter of Luann Rininger, Stoystown. She is a 12th grade honors student who plays soccer. She is the student athletic director and school record holder for rifle. Hanik is the son of Toni Hanik, Boswell. He is a 12th grade college prep student.

Breanna Nash and Jon Scott were selected at the Boswell Jaycees November athlete of the month for North Star. Nash is the daughter of Jen and Tom Nash, Jennerstown. She is a 12th grade honors and AP student who is senior class treasurer and archery club president. She plays volleyball. Scott is the son of Dan Scott and Jessica Scott, Acosta. He is a 12th grade college prep student who plays soccer.

Meyersdale at county chorus

Meyersdale Area High School and Middle School students attended the 2022 Somerset County Chorus Festival Nov. 21 and 22, hosted by the Somerset Area School District. The festival is sponsored by the Somerset County Music Educators. Tricia Diamond and Jennifer Schrift were the hosts and Susan DiPasquale was the location coordinator. The concerts were held Nov. 22.

High school students participating were Laurel Daniels, Shelby Hetz, Jaylynn Anderson, Christian Nave, Emma Kretchman and Avery Logsdon.

Dr. Scott Rieker was the guest director for the high school. He is the director of Choral Activities and Choral Music Education at Frostburg State University, where he conducts the Chamber Singers, University Chorale, Troubadours tenor/bass choir, teaching conducting, coursework in music education and supervising student-teachers. The FSU Chamber Singers were finalists for the 2021 American Prize for the Performance of American Music and the University Chorale was a finalist for the American Prize in Choral Performance. Rieker is also the director of music at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Cumberland, Maryland, and is a past-president of the Iowa Music Educators Association.

The students spent two days learning and practicing several selections, including “I Bought Me a Cat,” “Will There Really be a Morning,” “Ain’a That Good News,” Beati Mortui,” “City Called Heaven,” “La Bendita Illusion,” and “Sure on That Shining Night.”

Middle school students were Isabella Donica, Brooke Sell and Gavon Steinberg. Kye-Won Doyle was the guest director. She is the director of the Crimson Youth Chorus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Community Music School. In 2019, Doyle was honored to co-conduct the Canon-Mcmillan Bella Voce Choir at the NAfME All-East Conference. In 2017, she conducted the PMEA District 3 Middle School Choirs.

Throughout her career, Doyle has led choral workshops in Germany and has performed in a variety of theatrical productions. She has also directed, music directed or choreographed more than 50 theatrical productions. The students spent two days learning and practicing several selections, including “Amazing,” “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Sing to Me,” “Three Quotes by Mark Twain,” and “Tshotsholoza.”

Bishop McCort Breakfast with Santa

The Bishop McCort Catholic High School Le’ Education en Vogue club is featuring Breakfast with Santa, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 10, in the Bishop McCort Bach Student Union. The theme for Breakfast with Santa is “The Polar Express.” Students in Le’ Education en Vogue will be serving up a breakfast for children and their families. There will be crafts and games for children. Santa will be taking Christmas wishes throughout theevent. Reservations are not necessary.

Meyersdale FFA students do well

Several members of the Meyersdale Area High School Chapter of FFA excelled at the annual FFA Fall Skills competition held Nov. 17 at the Somerset County Tech Center. Estella Friend, Bailey Knotts, Jimmy Kretchman and Maddie Dively placed first in the FFA Knowledge with a score of 129.5. A total of six teams were in the competition — Meyersdale, Somerset, Rockwood, Shanksville and Berlin SCTC.

Six teams and six students competed in the Small Gas Engines Contest. Meyersdale placed second and individually, Jesse Miller placed third and Brayden VanBogelen placed fifth. In a field of 17 competitors, three placed in the Tractor Driving Competition — Caleb Snyder placed sixth, followed by Aidan Mosholder in seventh place and Evan Knotts in 10th place.

A total of 37 FFA members from throughout the county participated in the Horse Judging Contest. Meyersdale had several students place in this competition — Christopher Engle, 11th place; Addysin Hetz, 15th place; Carrie Engle, 16th place; Natalie Trobridge, 17th place; Alexis Mostoller, 25th place; Maddie Engle, 26th place; Katelyn Laws, 34th place; and Autumn Baker, 35th place. Thirty-six students from the six county teams competed in the Wildlife competition. Eli Miller and Christine Wise placed 27th and 30th respectively.
