Sarver, Whitfield at Exchange Club

Nathan Sarver and Angelina Whitfield were selected to represent the Somerset County Technology Center at the Somerset Exchange Club.

Nathan Sarver is a student attending SCTC in the machine technology program. He is president of the class, the president of the BotsIQ club, SCTC’s 2022 Student of Distinction for November, the president of Shade-Central City High School’s Envirothon team, and a recipient of multiple Challenge Program awards since his sophomore year. Sarver is also recognized as a student on the co-op program at SCTC. He is employed at Global/SFC Valve in Somerset where he is a quality assurance inspector.

After graduation, Sarver plans to continue his quality assurance inspector apprenticeship.

Angelina Corin Whitfield, Somerset, is the daughter of Vanessa Hilliard and is a senior at the Somerset Area High School. She has achieved highest honors on the honor roll. She is also a member of the high school esports team where she is the captain of the League of Legends team and a member of the Overwatch team. Whitfield is a third year student at the Somerset County Technology Center in the health occupations program. She is a member of the SADD program at SCTC. Last year, she received an award through the Challenge Program for academic excellence. This year, she received the National African American Reconition Award and the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award through the College Board organization.After high school, Whitfield plans to further her education and become a medical assistant before continuing her studies to become a nurse practitioner.

Berlin Forensics and Congressional Debate Team opens season

The Berlin Brothersvalley High School Speech Team opened its season traveling to Forest Hills. This year’s team competes in a variety of categories: Morgan Twombly — Informative Speaking; Sara Stoltzfus — Poetry Reading; Hayley Oakes — Informative Speaking; Lilith Tooker — Prose Reading; Caden Montgomery —Commentary; Levi Leonard and Michael Cary — Duo Interpretation.

At the first meet, Twombly captured first place in Informative Speaking. The team’s next meet is at Conemaugh Township Jan. 10. A conflict with a field trip kept all team members from participating at the first season meet.

Congressional Debate

The Congressional Debate team hosted the first Congressional Debate. Morgan Twombly won Outstanding Speaker first place, and Michael Cary and Hayley Oakes both received the Merit Speaker Award. Sara Stoltzfus served as presiding officer.

Johnston at Rotary

Corinne Ann Johnston was selected to represent Somerset Area High School at the Rotary Club of Somerset during December. Johnston is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Johnston, Somerset. She is an honors/AP student.

Johnston's extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, Interact Club, SADD Club, student council and the varsity tennis team. She has received three varsity tennis letters and attended district orchestra.

She is a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. After graduation she plans to attend a four year college. Her hobbies include running and spending time with friends and family.

Corradini honored by Soroptimists

Tara Leslie Corradini, Central City, was selected by the Soroptimist International of Somerset County as the student volunteer of the month. Corradini is the daughter of Fred and Dana Corradini. She is a student at Shade-Central City High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, student council and Varsity Club.

Corradini was selected to the Somerset All-County first team and Daily American all star softball team. She attends Berkey Church of the Brethren. Her community service includes 60 total hours working with Central City Park and Recreation, National Honor Society Flight 93 services and school services.

After she graduates from high school, Corradini hopes to attend college to major in forensic sciences. Her hobbies include softball, volleyball and hunting.
