Somerset County top baseball, softball, tennis, track and field performers for May 6-12

Athlete of the Week

Shade junior softball player Anna Deneen was selected Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Windber senior baseball player Cole Strick earned Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts April 29 to May 5.

In four games, Deneen tallied 10 hits, 15 RBIs and four runs scored. She had five RBIs against both Berlin and North Star.

Meanwhile, in five games, Strick produced nine hits, six RBIs and eight runs scored.

Thursday

Baseball

Portage 22, Conemaugh Township 6: In Davidsville, the Mustangs struck for 14 runs in the sixth inning to break open an 8-5 game and down the Indians.

Jackson Byer and Brady Kist each had two RBIs for Conemaugh Township. Tanner Shirley produced three hits and an RBI.

North Star 14, Conemaugh Valley 3: In East Taylor Township, Braden Livingston recorded two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Cougars toppled the Blue Jays.

Cayden Turner and Andy Retassie each provided three hits and two RBIs for North Star. Tim Tretter drove in two runs. Garrett Huzsek pitched four innings and gave up two runs and three hits for the win. Turner struck out five in relief.

Rockwood 13, Meyersdale 1: In Meyersdale, Hunter Whipkey recorded two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Rockets rolled past the Red Raiders on five innings.

Carson Modrak and Jonathan Felesky each had two RBIs. Jack Pletcher allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out 13.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 16, Shade 0: In Shanksville, Zion Manthey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Vikings past the Panthers in three innings.

Manthey also was the winning pitcher. Ty Walker had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs. Jordan Young and Ian Fox each drove in three runs and scored twice.

Somerset 12, Bishop Carroll 4: In Somerset, Ethan Hemminger tallied three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored to propel the Golden Eagles past the Huskies.

Spencer Marteeny had two hits and two RBIs for Somerset. Brad Bruner pitched six innings and earned the win.

Berlin Brothersvalley 12, Turkeyfoot 2: In Berlin, Carson Webreck delivered three RBIs as the Mountaineers bested the Rams in five innings.

Preston Glotfelty drove in two runs for Berlin. Caleb Leonard added two hits. Nick Alvarez was the winning pitcher.

Kameron Kemp tallied two hits for Turkeyfoot.

Softball

Bedford 6, Windber 3: In Bedford, Aaliyah James hit a home run in the Ramblers' non-conference setback to the Bisons.

Gina Gaye recorded her 200th career strikeout in the circle.

Berlin Brothersvalley 19, Turkeyfoot 4: In Berlin, Kassidy Smith, Mikaela Huston, Mckenzie Moore, Rori Allen and Shay Fochtman each had two hits as the Mountaineers cruised past the Rams.

Sadie Snyder earned the win in the circle.

Shade 23, Shanksville-Stonycreek 12: In Shanksville, Jenna Muha delivered four hits, including a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored as the Panthers upended the Vikings in six innings.

Cassidy Mauger had five hits, five RBIs and six runs scored for Shade. Tara Corradini allowed two runs on eights hits while striking out four in three innings.

Kendahl Stutzman drove in three runs for Shanksville. Rylee Snyder, Allie Zeigler and Liz Salsgiver all drove in two runs.

Meyersdale 13, Rockwood 3: In Meyersdale, Shelby Hetz, Marcella Dupre and Amber Long each had two hits and two RBIs to lift the Red Raiders past the Rockets in five innings.

Izabella Donaldson added two hits for Meyersdale. She allowed three runs, two earned and fanned nine.

Baseball

Conemaugh Township 28, Ferndale 1: Brady Kist launched two home runs, including a grand slam and provided five RBIs and three runs scored as the Indians thumped the Yellow Jackets in three innings.

Jackson Byer had two home runs, six RBIs and five runs scored. Tanner Shirley homered and drove in four runs. Larry Weaver hit a grand slam. Jon Updyke struck out five.

North Star 13, Conemaugh Township 6: In Davidsville, Cayden Turner had a double, four RBIs and two runs scored as the Cougars took down the Indians.

Glendon Griffith, Andy Retassie and Connor Yoder each recorded two RBIs for North Star. Tim Tretter and Braden Livingston each had two hits and an RBI. Griffith went two innings on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned. Yoder pitched five innings of relief and struck out seven.

Jackson Byer homered and drove in two runs for Conemaugh Township. Tanner Shirley had three hits and scored three hits. Tyler Weber added two RBIs.

Somerset 15, Bedford 5: In Bedford, Spencer Marteeny provided three hits, three RBIs and a run as the Golden Eagles belted the Bisons.

Marteeny allowed five runs, two unearned on five hits in six innings while striking out 10. Zane Hagans had two hits, three RBIs and two runs while Bryce Mulhollen and Owen Miller each drove in two runs.

Meyersdale 10, Shanksville-Stonycreek 4: Matt Boyce tallied three hits and scored two runs as the Red Raiders took down the Vikings.

Bradin Schrock struck out six and picked up the win on the mound.

Ian Fox had two hits and scored a run for Shanksville.

Mapletown 16, Turkeyfoot 2: The Rams suffered a non-conference setback in five innings.

Zack Ryan and Bryce Schmidt singled and scored a run for Turkeyfoot.

Softball

Windber 3, Shade 1: In Windber, Gina Gaye tossed a 3-hitter as the Ramblers upset the Panthers.

Tara Corradini threw a 5-hitter for Shade. Reese Koback doubled.

Conemaugh Township 15, North Star 0: In Davidsville, Olivia Weyandt went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a 3-run home run to power the Indians past the Cougars in three innings.

Weyandt also threw a no-hitter. Abby Kniss, Katie Troxell, Mya Nanna, Natalie Kimmel and Regan Mash each had a hit.

Meyersdale 19, Shanksville-Stonycreek 4: In Shanksville, Izabella Donaldson recorded three hits, including two home runs and four RBIs as the Red Raiders rolled over the Vikings.

Donaldson allowed four runs, two earned on six hits while striking out 12. Amelia Kretchman and Morgan Walters each had four RBIs and combined for five hits. Jessica Daughton added three hits and three runs.

Josie Snyder, Rylee Snyder and Liz Salsgiver each had two hits for Shanksville.

Tennis

Somerset (4)(3), Richland (1)(2): The Golden Eagles captured two victories over the Rams.

In Match 1, Liam Egal won in singles while Jack Richards and Isaac St. Clair earned a doubles win. Somerset's other victories came via forfeit.

In Match 2, Alven Huang and Kai Petrosky won in doubles. Somerset's other two points were from forfeits.

Baseball

Portage (6)(13), Windber (2)(2): In Portage, the Ramblers suffered a pair of setbacks to the Mustangs.

In Game 1, Joe Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Windber. Cole Strick hit an RBI triple.

In Game 2, Strick hit a solo home run. Lucas Oleksa delivered two hits while John Shuster hit an RBI triple.

Blacklick Valley 8, Shanksville-Stonycreek 5: Ty Walker recorded two hits, including a double and two runs scored in Shanksville's setback to Blacklick Valley.

Ian Fox and Hunter Bryner each had two hits for Shanksville.

Berlin Brothersvalley 11, Shade 1: In Berlin, Caleb Leonard provided two hits, three RBIs and two runs to lead the Mountaineers past the Panthers in five innings.

Craig Jarvis and Cale Kosic each had two RBIs for Berlin. Cory Jose pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on no hits.

North Star 10, Ferndale 4: In Boswell, Braden Livingston tallied two hits, including a double and three RBIs to lift the Cougars past the Yellow Jackets.

Livingston pitched six innings, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits and one walk while striking out five. Cameron Snoeberger delivered two RBIs.

Conemaugh Township 15, Blacklick Valley 2: In Nanty Glo, Tanner Shirley produced two hits, four RBIs and a run scored as the Indians bested the Vikings in five innings.

Larry Weaver had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Brady Kist added two hits, two RBIs and three runs. Tyler Weber earned the win.

Conemaugh Township 13, Conemaugh Valley 3: In East Taylor Township, Larry Weaver had three hits, including a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored as the Indians topped the Blue Jays.

Owen Tomb had three RBIs for Conemaugh Township. Jackson Byer tallied three hits, including a triple and two runs. Brady Kist provided two hits and three runs scored. Tanner Shirley allowed two unearned runs on three hits in five innings to pick up the win.

Meyersdale 10, Turkeyfoot 0: In Confluence, Ryan Sechler delivered four hits, an RBI and four runs score to send the Red Raiders past the Rams in four innings.

Tyler Sandy and Dayton Collins each had two RBIs. Sechler allowed two hits and struck out six over four innings.

Softball

Shade 22, Berlin Brothersvalley 16: In Berlin, Cassidy Mauger delivered four hits and five RBIs as the Panthers won a slugfest over the Mountaineers.

Jenna Muha and Emily Rapsky each had three hits for Shade.

Kassidy Smith led Berlin with five hits and four RBIs. Evelyn Black had three hits. Rori Allen added three hits, including a home run.

There were 40 total hits in the contest.

Portage (6)(4), Windber (2)(3): In Portage, the Ramblers dropped both games of a double-header to the Mustangs.

In Game 1, Angel James went 3-for-3 with two doubles for Windber. Mady Arnold added two hits. In Game 2, Maryn Swank drove in the winning run in the seventh for Portage.

James went 3-for-3 for Windber. Arnold tallied three hits while Gina Gaye added two hits, including a double.

Somerset 8, Greater Johnstown 4: In Somerset, Savannah Landis recorded two hits, including a double and five RBIs as the Golden Eagles doubled up the Trojans.

Kylie Walker was 3-for-3 for Somerset. Bella Baumgardner drove in two runs.

Blacklick Valley 21, Shanksville-Stonycreek 12: In Shanksville, Kendahl Stutzman had two hits, including a double and a triple as well as six RBIs in Shanksville's setback to Blacklick Valley.

Tara Boozer tallied two RBIs while Josie Snyder scored four runs for Shanksville. Kyleia Leasure provided three hits.

Bedford 3, Somerset 2: In Bedford, Liam Egal and Grayson Yutzey picked up singles victories in the Golden Eagles' narrow setback to the Bisons in the team title match.

Cayden Turner had two hits and four RBIs. He pitched five innings and allowed one hit, a walk and struck out six. Connor Yoder added two hits and two RBIs.

Somerset 4, Bishop McCort 1: In Somerset, Aiden VanLenten twirled a one-hit, eight-strikeout gem over 6 1/3 innings as the Golden Eagles bested the Crimson Crushers.

Brad Bruner had two hits and an RBI for Somerset. Ethan Hemminger provided two hits. Eric Harris earned the save.

Rockwood 15, Shade 2: In Cairnbrook, Andrew Weaver had two hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Rockets tamed the Panthers in five innings.

Nico Hager and Jacob Griffith each tallied two RBIs for Rockwood. Jonathan Felesky allowed two unearned runs on one hit and struck out eight in three innings.

Dave Leipchack recorded the only hit for Shade. Aaron Maga scored two runs.

Windber 16, Conemaugh Valley 8: In East Taylor Township, Joe Reynolds went 3-for-4, including an inside-the-park home run and four RBIs as the Ramblers doubled up the Blue Jays.

Reynolds was also the winning pitcher. Andrew Scalia had two doubles and four RBIs. Jake Vargo and Lucas Oleksa each hit RBI doubles while Rex Rininger added two RBIs.

Softball

Conemaugh Township 16, North Star 2: In Ferrellton, Abby Kniss tallied two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Indians powered past the Cougars in four innings.

Sierra LaPorta, Callie Parker and Taylor Jarvis each had two RBIs for Conemaugh Township. LaPorta allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five.

Laiken Grove delivered two hits and two RBIs for North Star. Kyra Turner had two hits.

Meyersdale 10, Rockwood 0: In Rockwood, Izabella Donaldson tossed a no-hitter, fanning 16 Rockets in the Red Raiders' six-inning victory.

Donaldson helped her cause with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Zoe Hetz tallied three hits, two RBIs and three runs. Shelby Hetz also drove in three runs.

Shade 10, Shanksville-Stonycreek 0: In Cairnbrook, Anna Deneen provided three hits, including two doubles, five RBIs and a run scored as the Panthers blanked the Vikings in five innings.

Emily Rapsky delivered two hits and two runs. Tara Corradini and Jaedyn Krupper combined for a 3-hit shutout.

Bishop McCort 9, Somerset 8: In Somerset, Kylie Walker tallied two hits, including a double and an RBI in the Golden Eagles' narrow setback to the Crimson Crushers.

Gracie Bowers had two hits and two RBIs for Somerset.
