Somerset County top baseball, softball, tennis, track performers for April 29 to May 5

Athlete of the Week

Windber track and field senior Gino Flori earned Daily American Somerset County Male Athlete of the Week while Windber sophomore track and field standout Shannon Tokarsky was selected female Athlete of the Week for their efforts April 25-28.

Flori broke a school record in the shot put with a throw of 52-7. The old record stood for more than 40 years.

Meanwhile, Tokarsky won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and was a member of the 1600-meter relay team in a triumph over Portage.

Thursday

Baseball

Berlin Brothersvalley 12, Shade 2: In Cairnbrook, Preston Glotfelty had two hits and three RBIs as the Mountaineers bested the Panthers in five innings.

Caleb Leonard produced two RBIs while Cooper Huston added two hits for Berlin. Hayden Hutzell struck out four in the win.

Dave Leipchack had two hits for Shade.

Rockwood 6, Berlin Brothersvalley 5: In Altoona, Rockwood tallied three runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge the Mountaineers.

Andrew Weaver and Jack Pletcher each had two hits for Rockwood. Weaver, Carson Brown, Luke Beahr and Jonathan Felesky each drove in a run. Carson Modrak pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

Carson Webreck and Craig Jarvis each had two RBIs for Berlin.

Rockwood 10, Turkeyfoot 0: In Rockwood, Carson Modrak had two hits, including a home run, two RBIs and three runs as the Rockets bested the Rams in five innings.

Luke Beahr and Nico Hager each delivered two RBIs.

North Star 10, Windber 9: In Boswell, the Cougars rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including the game-winning hit by Andy Retassie which scored Glendon Griffith as North Star upended Windber.

Retassie had three hits and four RBIs on the day. Jeremy Mack added two hits and two RBIs while Cayden Turner provided three hits. Connor Yoder pitched four innings of relief and allowed only one run on one hit.

Lucas Oleksa delivered two hits and three RBIs for Windber. Andrew Scalia had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Joe Reynolds tallied two hits and two runs.

Somerset 13, Penn Cambria 3: Zane Hagans produced two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored as the Golden Eagles topped the Panthers in six innings.

Bryce Mulhollen, Spencer Marteeny and Aiden VanLenten each had two RBIs. Owen Miller added two hits and an RBI. Hunter Krotzer pitched four innings, allowing two runs, one earned on two hits one walk and striking out five.

Softball

Windber 13, North Star 2: In Ferrellton, Gina Gaye went 2-for-3 with a triple as the Ramblers bested the Cougars in five innings.

Gaye also earned the win in the circle. Skylee Miller and Lindsey Custer each had two hits for Windber.

Molly Gontis provided two hits for North Star.

Shade 16, Berlin Brothersvalley 6: In Cairnbrook, Anna Deneen delivered five RBIs as the Panthers downed the Mountaineers in five innings.

Jenna Muha had three hits, including two triples and three runs scored for Shade. Reese Koback added two hits, a run and four RBIs. Tara Corradini and Cassidy Mauger each had two hits. Corradini earned the win.

Kassidy Smith provided three hits, including two doubles and three runs for Berlin. Mikaela Huston and Eve Black each had two hits and two RBIs.

Forest Hills 15, Somerset 11: In Somerset, Zane Hagans recorded three hits, including a home run, four RBIs and a run scored, but the Golden Eagles dropped a slugfest to the Rangers.

Brad Bruner produced three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for Somerset. Ethan Hemminger added two RBIs.

Portage 3, Conemaugh Township 2: In Portage, Jackson Byer and Larry Weaver each had an RBI in the Indians' narrow setback to the Mustangs.

Tyler Weber worked four innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits, three walks and struck out six.

Turkeyfoot 10, Shade 3: In Altoona, Kameron Kemp delivered three RBIs and struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings of work as the Rams topped the Panthers at People's Natural Gas Field.

Zack Ryan hit a 2-run double for Turkeyfoot. Bryce Schmidt and Luke Bowers each had an RBI.

Connor Nihoff and Mike Busch each drove in a run for Shade.

Softball

Windber 12, Conemaugh Valley 2: In East Taylor Township, Gina Gaye went 3-for-4, including two home runs and three runs scored as the Ramblers romped the Blue Jays in five innings.

Aaliyah James had two hits, including a home run while Isabelle Byer added a home run. Hannah Tallion was the winning pitcher.

Shade 9, Meyersdale 2: In Meyersdale, Cassidy Mauger hit two solo home runs to propel the Panthers past the Red Raiders.

Anna Deneen had two hits for Shade. Tara Corradini picked up the win.

For Meyersdale, Zoe Hetz collected two hits.

Track and field

Meyersale sweeps Rockwood: The Red Raiders two down the Rockets in a dual meet. Meyersdale bested Rockwood 84-61 in the girls' meet and 94-54 in the boys' action.

Sky Rigo won the 100- and 200-meter dash as well as the pole vault for Meyersdale. Linzee Emerick claimed first in the shot put and discus while Elizabeth Sayler outran the field in the 400- and 800-meter dash.

Mollie Wheatley won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles along with the long jump for Rockwood.

Bryan Donitzen led the Meyersdale boys with wins in the 1600 and 3200 run. Bryson Hetz took first in the shot put and javelin while Tristin Ohler won the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Dustin Dran took first in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles for Rockwood.

Tennis

District 5 Class 2A team semifinals

Somerset 4, Tussey Mountain 1: Liam Egal and Kai Petrosky earned singles victories to lead the Golden Eagles past the Titans.

Mason Chabol and Jack Richards as well as Alven Huang and Isaac St. Clair picked up doubles wins.

North Star 2 Richland 1: In Altoona, the Cougars won a 10-inning thriller over the Rams at People's Natural Gas Field.

Glendon Griffith pitched eight innings, allowing one run on six hits, one walk and striking out four. Connor Yoder tossed the final two innings and picked up the win. Braden Livingston had two hits. His fielder's choice scored the winning run following an error.

Conemaugh Township 3, Windber 1: Jackson Byer and Brady Kist each had two hits, including solo home runs to propel the Indians past the Ramblers.

Aiden Prior had a hit and drove in a run for Conemaugh Township. Byer pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits and struck out four. Luke Weber picked up the win, throwing an inning of no-hit ball. Kist earned the save.

Lucas Oleksa tallied two hits and an RBI for Windber. Andrew Scalia struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.

Shanksville-Stonycreek (11)(21), Turkeyfoot (1)(2): In Shanksville, the Vikings swept a double-header over the Rams.

In Game 1, Alec Thiele drove in two runs and scored three times in a 5-inning victory. Ty Walker had two hits, two RBIs and two runs while Braxton Faidley added two hits and three RBIs. Isaac Jamison was the winning pitcher.

Luke Bowers had a hit and a run for Turkeyfoot.

In Game 2, Ian Fox had two hits, two RBIs and two runs for Shanksville. He was also the winning pitcher. Walker went 4-for-4 with three doubles, five RBIs and three runs. Zion Manthey had two RBIs.

Jesse Culp had two hits and scored a run for Turkeyfoot.

Berlin Brothersvalley 7, Meyersdale 5: In Meyersdale, Carson Webreck tallied two hits, three RBIs and a run scored as the Mountaineers edged the Red Raiders.

Caleb Leonard added two hits, two RBIs and two runs for Berlin. Tyler Miller pitched four innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and four walks.

Collin Krause drove in two runs for Meyersdale. Matt Boyce and Dayton Collins each had three hits.

Softball

Windber 8, Conemaugh Township 2: In Davidsville, Isabelle Byer went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run to lead the Ramblers past the Indians.

Mady Arnold hit two doubles for Windber. Gina Gaye earned the win in the circle.

Olivia Weyandt and Sierra LaPorta each had two hits for Conemaugh Township.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 17, Turkeyfoot 2: In Shanksville, Kori Boozer produced three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored as the Vikings picked up a four-inning victory.

Liz Salsgiver and Lindsay Frazier each had two RBIs for Shanksville. Kendahl Stutzman tossed a 2-hitter.

Meyersdale 11, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: Marcella Dupre and Amber Long each had two hits as the Red Raiders bested the Mountaineers in five innings.

Izabella Donaldson hit a home run. She gave up one unearned run, two hits, one walk and struck out 12.

Taylor Hillegass and Eve Black collected hits for Berlin.

Central Cambria 5, Somerset 1: In Ebensburg, Kylie Walker had a hit and scored a run in the Golden Eagles' setback to the Red Devils.

Windber 13, Conemaugh Valley 3: In Windber, Cole Strick went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Ramblers topped the Blue Jays in six innings.

Jake Vargo had three hits, including a 2-run double and three RBIs. Lucas Oleksa and Andrew Scalia each had two RBIs. Joe Reynolds had three hits and scored twice. Reynolds allowed one earned run over 4 2/3 innings.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 18, Shade 1: In Cairnbrook, Ty Walker delivered three hits, five RBIs and three runs scored as the Vikings turned aside the Panthers in three innings.

Christian Musser tallied two RBIs. Zion Manthey contributed two hits and two runs.

Aaron Maga had the lone RBI for the Panthers.

Fort Hill 16, Berlin Brothersvalley 7: In Berlin, Caleb Leonard had two hits and three runs scored in the Mountaineers' non-conference setback.

Pace Prosser produced two hits and a run for Berlin.

Softball

Conemaugh Valley 17, Windber 2: In Windber, Skylee Miller had two doubles and two RBIs in the Ramblers' setback to the Blue Jays.

Mady Arnold added two hits for Windber.

Meyersdale 11, Mountain Ridge 1: In Meyersdale, Jessica Daughton recorded three hits, including a 3-run home run, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Red Raiders earned a non-conference victory in five innings.

Izabella Donaldson had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. She pitched three innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven. Amelia Kretchman produced two RBIs.

Track and field

Windber, Conemaugh Township split: In Davidsville, the Ramblers and Indians earned a meet split.

The Windber boys captured a 91-59 victory while the Conemaugh Township girls earned a 94-56 win.

Windber's Keith Charney won the high jump, triple jump and was a member of the 1600-meter relay team along with Dylan Tomlinson, Zach Barkley and Nick Dom.

Conemaugh Township's Ethan Black won the 100- and 200-meter dash, long jump and was a member of the 400-meter relay team with Jackson Byer, Christian Ruiz and Dmetrius Johnson.

In the girls' meet, Conemaugh Township's Izzy Slezak won the 200-meter dash and was a member of the 400-meter relay along with Asia Zwick, Mary Hostetter and Ellie Speigle. Hostetter also won the 100-meter dash.

Riley Brubaker won the triple, long and high jump for Windber. Samantha Toki won the 400-dash was was a member of the 3200 relay along with Rylee Ott, Anna Steinbeck and Audrey Hart.

Tennis

District 5 2A championship

Somerset senior Liam Egal captured the District 5 Class 2A championship defeating Bedford's Nick Beard in the title match 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.

Egal beat Windber's Braydon Wojcik 10-1 in the quarters then topped Bedford's Tristen Ruffley 10-3 in the semis.

Conemaugh Township 10, Bishop McCort 0: In Johnstown, Larry Weaver allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked two as the Indians claimed the Gene Schultz Memorial Tournament title over the Crimson Crushers in five innings.

Weaver went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Owen Tomb drove in two runs.

North Star 8, Blacklick Valley 2: In Boswell, Connor Yoder went 2-for-3, including a double and two RBIs as the Cougars downed the Vikings.

Braden Livingston doubled and drove in two runs for North Star. Livingston pitched five innings allowing eight hits one run, one walk and struck out four.

In Game 1, Cole Strick went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Windber. Joe Reynolds had two hits and scored three runs. Aiden Gray hit a 3-run double and scored four times. Andrew Scalia allowed three runs on three hits and struck out seven in four innings.

In Game 2, Gray delivered two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Strick, Lucas Oleksa and Jake Vargo all had two hits and two RBIs. Rex Rininger was the winning pitcher.

Berlin Brothersvalley 15, Hyndman 0: In Berlin, Cory Jose and Pace Prosser each had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored as the Mountaineers cruised to a four inning win.

Cooper Huston and Cale Kosic each had two RBIs. Craig Jarvis tallied two hits, including a triple and two runs scored. Jose, Nick Alvarez and Cole Hyatt combined to throw a no-hitter.

Conemaugh Township 11, Westmont Hilltop 3: In Johnstown, Aiden Prior tallied two hits and three RBIs as the Indians bested the Hilltoppers in Game 1 of the Gene Schultz Memorial Tournament.

Tanner Shirley produced two hits, including a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored for Conemaugh Township. Jackson Byer had three RBIs. Tyler Weber hit a home run. Weber also tossed a complete game, allowing three runs, none earned on six hits, no walks and struck out two.

Rockwood 13, Shanksville-Stonycreek 1: In Shanksville, Jack Pletcher pitched 5 2/3 innings and struck out 13 as the Rockets bested the Vikings in six innings.

Pletcher had two RBIs and two runs scored. Hunter Whipkey recorded two hits, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Ian Fox had a hit and a run for Shanksville.

Softball

Windber (5)(5), Blacklick Valley (3)(3): In Windber, the Ramblers swept a double header over the Vikings.

Mady Arnold went 2-for-4 with a double, triple an RBI and two runs scored for Windber. Gina Gaye two RBIs. Gaye allowed three runs and struck out 10 in five innings. Hannah Tallion earned the save.

In Game 2, Gaye struck out eight in a complete game. She went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Aaliyah James was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Laken Havyer doubled and tripled.

Shade 15, North Star 0: In Cairnbrook, Jaedyn Krupper tossed a no-hitter and struck out five as the Panthers mauled the Cougars in three innings.

Anna Deneen delivered three hits, five RBIs and a run. Lucy Mincek had two hits, three RBIs and a run. Jenna Muha added two hits, two RBIs and three runs.

Rockwood 17, Shanksville-Stonycreek 4: In Shanksville, Kenadie Robosson tallied two hits and four RBIs to lead the Rockets past the Vikings.

Meghan Bowers had a hit and three RBIs for Rockwood. Kaitlyn King added three hits. She also struck out nine.

Kori Boozer drove in two runs for Shanksville. Rylee Snyder added two hits and an RBI.

Tennis

Somerset 4, Windber 1: Liam Egal and Mason Chabol picked up singles victories as the Golden Eagles topped the Ramblers.

Somerset won both doubles matches by forfeit.

Bradon Wojcik had Windber's lone win.

Track and field

Windber boys win NBC Invitational: The Windber boys earned 84 points to win the Northern Bedford Invitational.

Dom Bifano won the javelin while Gino Flori took first in the shot put.

Conemaugh Township's Ethan Black set a meet record in the 100- and 200-meter dash.

Individual girls winners include Windber's Riley Brubaker in the long jump and triple jump as well as Samantha Toki in the 400 dash. Meyersdale's Linzee Emerick won the shot put.

Softball

Shanksville (23)(18), Berlin Brothersvalley (7)(15): The Vikings swept a double header against the Mountaineers.

In Game 1, Kori Boozer produced five hits, including two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored for Shanksville. Tara Boozer tallied three hits, four RBIs and three runs. Josie Snyder had four hits, two RBIs and four runs scored. Rylee Snyder had four hits and three runs. Kendahl Stutzman struck out nine.

Rori Allen had three hits for Berlin.

In Game 2, Rylee Snyder hit a walk-off grand slam as the Vikings won a slugfest.

Stutzman had four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Josie Snyder added four hits and four runs while Kori Boozer produced two hits, two RBIs and three runs.

Shay Fochtman had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for Berlin. Kassidy Smith and Mikaela Huston delivered two RBIs apiece.

Track and field

Rios takes third: Somerset senior Hailey Rios finished third in the long jump at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Rios leaped 19 feet, 2 inches.
