Somerset County top baseball, softball and track and field performers May 13-19

Athlete of the Week

Windber sophomore track and field athlete Riley Brubaker was selected Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Windber junior track and field athlete Dominic Bifano earned Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts May 6-12.

Brubaker won the triple jump and long jump at the WestPAC track and field championships.

Meanwhile, Bifano won both the discus and javelin at the WestPAC track and field championships.

Thursday

Baseball

Conemaugh Township 8, Berlin Brothersvalley 7: In Davidsville, Tanner Shirley hit a walk-off single, scoring Jackson Byer, who hit a one-out triple earlier in the ninth inning, to lift the Indians over the Mountaineers.

Shirley had four hits, two RBIs and scored once in the game. Byer tallied two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Owen Tomb provided two hits and an RBI.

Zack Calvert had three hits and an RBI for Berlin. Pace Prosser provided two RBIs while Cory Jose and Cale Kosic each had two hits.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 20, Forbes Road 5: In Shanksville, Ty Walker homered, had two RBIs and scored two runs as the Vikings rolled to a 4-inning win.

Ian Fox had three hits and three RBIs for Shanksville. Hunter Bryner tallied three hits and two runs while Christian Musser provided two doubles and three runs. Alec Thiele scored three runs. He was also the winning pitcher.

Softball

Windber 9, Greater Johnstown 2: In Windber, Isabelle Byer had a hit and two RBIs as the Ramblers took down the Trojans.

Aaliyah James and Lindsey Custer each tripled for Windber. Maggie Manippo tallied two hits, including a double. Gina Gaye struck out nine in the win.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 9, Forbes Road 8: In Shanksville, Rylee Snyder and Liz Salsgiver each recorded two hits and two runs as the Vikings picked up a non-conference win.

Salsgiver, Lindsay Frazier, Emily Daniels Tara and Kori Boozer each had an RBI for Shanksville.

Wednesday

Baseball

North Star 9, Rockwood 5: In Boswell, Cayden Turner and Jeremy Mack each had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored as the Cougars took down the Rockets.

Andy Retassie also drove in two runs for North Star. Connor Yoder pitched five innings allowing three runs on eight hits, three walks while striking out eight.

Jack Pletcher had two home runs and four RBIs for Rockwood. Carson Modrak and Andrew Weaver each had two hits.

Windber 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: Jason Tyger provided the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to score J.J. Hileman as the Ramblers edged the Mountaineers.

Cole Strick had two hits, including a solo home run for Windber. Joe Reynolds pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on four hits, one walk while striking out nine.

Pace Prosser had an RBI single while Cale Kosic added two hits for Berlin.

Windber 11, Meyersdale 1: In their second game of the day, Strick recorded two doubles and an RBI as the Ramblers romped the Red Raiders in six innings.

Andrew Scalia delivered two hits and two RBIs fro Windber. He also pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two hits and striking out eight. Hileman drove in a run.

Chestnut Ridge 6, Conemaugh Township 3: In Davidsville, Larry Weaver had two hits, including a triple and an RBI in the Indians' setback to the Lions.

Brady Kist and Tyler Weber each drove in a run for Conemaugh Township.

Softball

Berlin Brothersvalley 17, Windber 16: In Windber, Kassidy Smith went 3-for-4, including a triple, five runs scored and three RBIs as the Mountaineers edged the Ramblers in a slugfest.

MiKaela Huston went 4-for-5 with two RBIs for Berlin. Taylor Hillegass added two hits and four RBIs.

Mady Arnold provided two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for Windber. Katarina Vatavuk had three hits, including an RBI. Angel James tallied three hits, including a double and a triple while Lexi James added three hits.

Fannett-Metal 12, Shanksville-Stonycreek 6: In Spring Run, Allie Zeigler hit a home run and provided two RBIs in the Vikings' non-conference loss.

Liz Salsgiver doubled and homered for Shanksville.

Vance Kimmel and Austin Orris each had three RBIs for North Star. Cayden Turner struck out eight over four innings, allowing three runs, one earned on four hits and two walks.

Christian Musser and Ian Fox each had two hits and an RBI for Shanksville.

Berlin Brothersvalley 16, Turkeyfoot 3: In Confluence, Craig Jarvis tallied three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Mountaineers bested the Rams in five innings.

Hunter Cornell had two hits and three RBIs while Pace Prosser added a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for Berlin.

Kameron Kemp hit a 2-run single for Turkeyfoot.

Softball

Meyersdale 15, Conemaugh Township 3: In Meyersdale, Shelby Hetz had two hits, including a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored as the Red Raiders rolled past the Indians in five innings.

Izabella Donaldson recorded three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored for Meyersdale. She allowed three runs, two earned on two hits and four walks while striking out seven. Zoe Hetz provided three hits an RBI and three runs while Jessica Daughton doubled and drove in two runs.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 13, North Star 2: In Ferrellton, Rylee Snyder provided three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored as the Vikings tamed the Cougars in five innings.

Kori Boozer had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for Shanksville. Josie Snyder and Kendahl Stutzman each drove in two runs while Tara Boozer added three hits, an RBI and two runs. Stutzman threw a 2-hitter.

Central Cambria 10, Somerset 0: In Somerset, Bella Baumgardner, Willa Sharbaugh and Savannah Landis each singled in the Golden Eagles' loss to the Red Devils.

Portage 18, Rockwood 8: At Mount Aloysius College, Jonathan Felesky recorded two hits and three RBIs in the Rockets' WestPAC title game loss to the Mustangs in six innings.

Andrew Weaver had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored for Rockwood. Jack Pletcher and Carson Brown each added two hits, an RBI and a run.

Richland 12, Somerset 2: In Richland Township, Zane Hagans had a hit and an RBI in the Golden Eagles five-inning setback to the Rams.

Bryce Mulhollen tallied a hit and a run for the Golden Eagles.

WestPAC championship

Meyersdale 8, Conemaugh Valley 7: At Mount Aloysius College, Izabella Donaldson hit a 3-run home run and struck out eight in the circle as the Red Raiders captured their fourth straight WestPAC softball championship.

Marcella Dupre hit a solo home run and added an RBI. Zoe Hetz, Morgan Walters and Jessica Daughton each had two hits.

Shanksville Stonycreek 10, McConnellsburg 0: In Shanksville, Josie Snyder tallied a hit and drove in three runs as the Vikings upended the Spartans in five innings.

Tara Boozer had two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Kyleia Leasure and Liz Salsgiver each had two RBIs. Rylee Snyder tallied three hits while Allie Zeigler added a pair of hits. Kendahl Stutzman struck out seven in the win.

Bedford 8, Somerset 3: In Somerset, Kylie Walker hit an RBI triple in the Golden Eagles' setback to the Bisons.

Savannah Landis also drove in a run for Somerset.

United 19, North Star 1: In Ferrellton, Laiken Grove recorded a hit and an RBI in the Cougars non-conference loss.

Molly Gontis had the only other North Star hit.

Baseball

Rockwood 11, Berlin Brothersvalley 6: Andrew Weaver had three hits, including two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored as the Rockets topped the Mountaineers.

Hunter Whipkey hit a home run and drove in three runs for Rockwood. Carson Modrak added three hits. Modrak pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing six runs on five hits, two walks while striking out eight to pick up the win.

Caleb Leonard tallied two hits, including a home run and four RBIs for Berlin.

Softball

Rockwood 13, Berlin Brothervalley 12: In Rockwood, Kenadie Robosson delivered four hits, an RBI and two runs scored as the Rockets edged the Mountaineers.

Kaitlyn King, Sydney Beals and Meghan Bowers each had two hits and two RBIs for Rockwood. Kaitlyn Pletcher and Elika Pletcher each had two RBIs.

Mckenzie Moore led Berlin with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Mikaela Huston added three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Taylor Hillegass provided three hits and three runs.

Somerset 3, Bald Eagle 1: In Somerset, Spencer Marteeny hit a walk-off home run to propel the Golden Eagles to a non-conference victory.

Kahne Foltz had a hit and an RBI for Somerset. Hunter Krotzer pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk. Aiden VanLenten pitched three innings of one-hit ball to earn the win in relief.

River Valley 14, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: In Berlin, Caleb Leonard recorded the lone hit for the Mountaineers in their five-inning non-conference setback.

Softball

River Valley 12, Berlin Brothersvalley 2: In Berlin, Kassidy Smith tripled and scored a run while Taylor Hillegass doubled and scored in the Mountaineers' non-conference setback.

May 12

Softball

Penn Cambria 11, Somerset 10: In Cresson, Gracie Bowers went 3-for-5, including a triple in the Golden Eagles' setback to the Panthers.

Kylie Walker tallied three hits while Chloe Miller and Savannah Landis each added two hits.
