Somerset County top basketball, wrestling, rifle, swimming, hockey performers: Jan. 7-13

Athletes of the Week

Berlin Brothersvalley sophomore basketball player Pace Prosser earned Daily American Somerset County Male Athlete of the Week while senior Ruby Korenoski, a member of the Conemaugh Township rifle team, was selected Female Athlete of the Week for their performances Jan. 3-6.

Prosser scored a game-high 29 points, including five 3-pointers, in a victory over Windber on Jan. 3.

Korenoski led the unbeaten Conemaugh Township rifle team to a victory over Bishop Carroll, shooting a 279 on Jan. 6.

Thursday

Boys basketball

Conemaugh Township 65, Windber 51: In Windber, Jackson Byer dropped 26 points to lead the Indians past the Ramblers.

Tanner Shirley scored 17 points for Conemaugh Township while John Updyke added 12 points.

Berlin Brothersvalley 75, Shanksville-Stonycreek 28: In Shanksville, Craig Jarvis delivered 23 points as the Mountaineers bested the Vikings.

Pace Prosser scored 19 points for Berlin.

Logan McCall led Shanksville with 10 points.

Ferndale 36, Johnstown Christian 29: In Hollsopple, Bruce Moore poured in 18 points as the Yellow Jackets edged the Bluejays.

Ethan Haney scored 12 points for Ferndale.

Diontae Coleman paced Johnstown Christian with 11 points.

Girls basketball

Rockwood 57, Meyersdale 54: Kaitlyn Pletcher and Elizabeth Haer each scored 19 points as the Rockets clipped the Red Raiders.

Mollie Wheatley netted 10 points for Rockwood.

Zoe Hetz led Meyersdale with 18 points. Emily Abraham contributed 17 points while Amelia Kretchman recorded 11.

Johnstown Christian 42, Ferndale 17: In Hollsopple, Unity Miller recorded 17 points and seven rebounds as the Bluejays downed the Yellow Jackets.

Sarah Huston tallied eight points and seven rebounds for Johnstown Christian.

Wrestling

Somerset 48, Greater Johnstown 12: The Golden Eagles soared past the Trojans in LHAC action.

Zane Hagans, Logan Baker and Deshonn Valentine picked up falls for Somerset.

North Star 31, Ligonier Valley 27: The Cougars earned a narrow victory over the Rams.

Ethan Yoder picked up a fall for North Star. Aiden Wojnarowski won by an 11-7 decision. Tim Tretter won by major decision 12-3.

Rifle

Meyersdale 1,224, Somerset 1,219: The Red Raiders edged the Golden Eagles in rifle action.

Somerset first-year shooter Samantha Acey shot a personal best 254.

Boys basketball

Bishop McCort 78, Somerset 50: In Johnstown, Trystan Fornari scored 16 points to lead the Crushers past the Golden Eagles.

Mason Nash tallied 16 points for Bishop McCort while Colby Cannizzaro chipped in 14. Zach King added 12 points.

Girls basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 50, Shanksville-Stonycreek 25: Gracie Sechler poured in a game-high 19 points to propel the Mountaineers past the Vikings.

Regan Lauer scored 10 points for Berlin.

Anna Gunby had 11 points for Conemaugh Valley.

Abby Barnick netted nine points for North Star.

Windber 48, Conemaugh Township 41: Gina Gaye dropped a game-high 17 points as the Ramblers edged the Indians.

Mariah Andrews tallied 13 points and six rebounds for Windber.

Mya Poznanski recorded 15 points for Conemaugh Township while Mya Nanna contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Swimming

Girls

Somerset 104, Altoona 56: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles swam past the Mountain Lions.

Hannah Kane and Carly Richard each earned four total firsts for Somerset. Haley Basala, Alyssa Richard and Hope Miller each had a pair of first place finishes.

Boys

Altoona 118, Somerset 38: In Somerset the Golden Eagles were downed by the Mountain Lions.

Caleb Antram won the 100 free and 100 breast for Somerset.

Boys basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 88, Northern Bedford 37: In Berlin, Pace Prosser dropped in a game-high 26 points as the Mountaineers downed the Panthers.

Craig Jarvis had 19 points for Berlin while Ryan Blubaugh added 18.

Conemaugh Township 75, Conemaugh Valley 35: In Davidsville, Jackson Byer netted 22 points to lead the Indians past the Blue Jays.

Ethan Black scored 12 points for Conemaugh Township while Tanner Shirley chipped in 11. John Updyke recorded nine points and 12 rebounds.

Noah Miller tallied 19 points for Conemaugh Valley.

Ferndale 46, North Star 34: In Johnstown, Bruce Moore delivered a game-high 21 points to propel the Yellow Jackets past the Cougars.

Ian Conway had 10 points for Ferndale.

CJ Biery led North Star with 11 points.

Rockwood 55, Meyersdale 44: In Meyersdale, Will Latuch scored 22 points to lead the Rockets past the Red Raiders.

Josiah Rock contributed 13 points for Rockwood while Aiden Ream added 10.

Ethan Simpson led Meyersdale with 15 points. Evan Brenneman had a double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds.

Portage 68, Windber 49: In Portage, the Mustangs used an 18-0 run from the end of the third quarter into the fourth to vault Portage past Windber.

Kaden Claar scored 20 points for the Mustangs. Andrew Miko added 15 points.

Aiden Gray paced Windber with 15 points. John Shuster tallied 12 points.

Rifle

Rockwood 1,206, Northern Bedford 1,111: Kelly Hearn shot a 261 as the Rockets bested the Panthers.

Alyssa Hunt (260) and Evan May (249) each shot a personal best for Rockwood.

North Star 1,336, Meyersdale 1,240: Elissa Barron fired a 280 to lead the Cougars past the Red Raiders.

Hunter Snoeberger shot a personal best 272 while Zachary Tedrow also recorded a 272 for North Star.

Linzee Emerick shot a 270 to lead Meyersdale.

Bishop Carroll 1,235, Somerset 1,184: The Golden Eagles dropped a home contest to the Huskies.

Dan Farabaugh (248), Rich Schlzen (239) and Lauren Behe (216) shot personal bests for Bishop Carroll.

Wrestling

Somerset 54, Bedford 0: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles blanked the Bisons.

Michael Bridge, Logan Baker and Deshonn Valentine all picked up falls for Somerset.

North Star 36, Conemaugh Township 27: The Cougars earned a narrow victory over the Indians.

Colton Frazier won by fall for North Star. Tim Tretter won by decision, 12-8 while Tuker Tirko picked up an 8-5 decision.

Tristen Hawkins, Ryan Thomas and John Haburcsak all won by fall for Conemaugh Township. Dylan Hovanec earned a 10-4 decision.

Richland 57, Somerset 38: In Somerset, Griffin LaRue dropped a game-high 21 points as the Rams topped the Golden Eagles.

Trent Rozich had 17 points for Richland while Sam Penna chipped in 15.

Caleb Platt netted 13 points for Somerset. Aiden VanLenten added 10.

Blacklick Valley 46, North Star 37: In Boswell, Cody Williams recorded a game-high 24 points to guide the Vikings past the Cougars.

CJ Biery scored 11 points for North Star while Brady Weimer contributed 10.

Girls basketball

Conemaugh Township 36, Conemaugh Valley 26: In Davidsville, Mya Poznanski tallied a game-high 20 points to go along with five steals as the Indians downed the Blue Jays.

Mya Nanna recorded six points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for Conemaugh Township. Jenna Brenneman amassed six points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Anna Gunby had 12 points for Conemaugh Valley.

Ferndale 42, North Star 41 (OT): In Johnstown, the Cougars dropped a heartbreaker to the Yellow Jackets in overtime.

Angelina Wagner scored 15 points for Ferndale.

Grace Metz had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds for North Star. Abby Barnick contributed 19 points while Jovi Jeske pulled down 11 rebounds.

Portage 43, Windber 35: In Portage, Sydni Sossong tallied 11 points as the Mustangs bested the Ramblers.

Gina Gaye scored 11 points for Windber. Mariah Andrews contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Richland 56, Somerset 22: In Richland Township, Jordyn Kinsey netted 19 points to propel the Rams past the Golden Eagles.

Julianna Stem scored 11 points for Richland.

Mia Rosman led Somerset with 12 points.

Rifle

Somerset 1,251, Chestnut Ridge 1,235: The Golden Eagles bested the Lions in varsity rifle action. No individual scores were reported.

Swimming

Boys

Somerset 52, Tyrone 50: Somerset edged Tyrone behind three victories from Zach Gibbs.

Gibbs won the 100 fly, 500 free and was a member of the victorious 200 medley relay team. Simon McGuire won the 200 IM and was a part of the 200 medley relay. Eli Hunt won the 200 free and was also a part of the 200 medley relay.

Girls

Somerset 107, Tyrone 56: Somerset cruised to a win over Tyrone.

Hannah Kane won the 500 free and 100 back and was a part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Carly Richard won the 100 and 200 free and was a part of the victorious 400 free relay. Alyssa Richard captured first in the 200 IM, 100 fly and was a member of the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Bella Prediger and Haley Basala took home three overall firsts.

Boys basketball

Blacklick Valley 69, Meyersdale 35: In Meyersdale, Cody Williams recorded 18 points to guide the Vikings past the Red Raiders.

Elijah Miller led Meyersdale with 18 points.

Meadowbrook Christian 48, Johnstown Christian 40: In Hollsopple, the Bluejays suffered a narrow setback.

Diontae Coleman netted a team-hight 23 points for Johnstown Christian. Michael Taylor added 11 points.

Girls basketball

Meadowbrook Christian 50, Johnstown Christian 36: In Hollsopple, Kailey Devlin scored a game-high 31 points as the visitors bested the Bluejays.

Unity Miller paced Johnstown Christian with 14 points. Sarah Huston contributed 11 points and five rebounds.

Boys basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 86, Turkeyfoot 24: In Berlin, a balanced offensive output led the Mountaineers past the Rams.

Pace Prosser scored 15 points for Berlin. Caleb Rohrs tallied 14 points and Craig Jarvis contributed 13. Ryan Blubaugh tallied 10 points.

Bryce Schmidt recorded 10 points for Turkeyfoot.

Windber 50, Blacklick Valley 39: Keith Charney scored a game-high 18 points, swiped five steals and dished out five assists to propel the Ramblers past the Vikings.

Blake Klosky scored 11 points for Windber. Aiden Gray had eight points and five assists. John Shuster grabbed seven rebounds.

Shanksville-Stonycreek 63, Rockwood 62 (OT): The Vikings won an overtime thriller over the Rockets.

Logan McCall dropped 19 points for Shanksville. Braden Adams scored 13 points while Christian Musser added 11.

Josiah Rock tallied a game-high 20 points for Rockwood. Will Latuch netted 18 points while Dalton Boden chipped in 10.

Chestnut Ridge 98, Somerset 65: In Somerset, Matt Whysong recorded a game-high 28 points as the Lions bested the Golden Eagles.

Christian Hinson scored 18 points for Chestnut Ridge.

Luke Housley paced Somerset with 23 points. Aiden VanLenten scored 16 points while Eli Mumau added 10 points.

Girls basketball

Turkeyfoot 43, Ferndale 40: In Johnstown, Payj Hostetler poured in 22 points to lead the Rams past the Yellow Jackets.

Shyanne Schur scored 10 points for Turkeyfoot while Maleigha Younkin added nine. The Rams began the game with only five healthy players, and finished the contest with just three on the floor.

Angelina Wagner tallied 14 points for Ferndale.

Chestnut Ridge 55, Somerset 39: Belle Bosch dropped a game-high 24 points to pace the Lions in an LHAC victory over the Golden Eagles.

Mia Rosman led Somerset with 15 points, including five 3-pointers. Gracie Bowers had 11 points and five assists. Shawna Walker grabbed eight rebounds.
