Somerset fighter Mikey Alves claims Golden Gloves sub-novice title

FALL RIVER — Mikey Alves of Somerset and the Fall River Police Athletic League became the first crowned champion at the 2023 Southern New England Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament at the PAL Hall.

In a close bout with Andrew Richards of Punishment Striking Systems of Swansea, Alves, a 2021 graduate of Somerset High School, last Saturday claimed the 132-pound sub-novice title, taking a split decision.

Their crowd-pleasing battle was one of 12 bouts contested in Week 2 of the SNEGG. The tournament concludes this Saturday (Jan. 28), with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and bell time scheduled for 7 p.m. Champions will be crowned in the sub-novice, novice and open divisions.

Alves was the only PAL boxer on last week's card.

Punishment Striking's dance card was much busier and the Swansea gym was victorious in three of its four bouts. Mason Ventura of Acushnet opened the card with a decision over Nikkie Basel of Albany, N.Y. in a riveting 152-pound special bout; Hannah Doyle of Providence forced Kasey Dziel of North Brookfield to take a standing 8-count en route to her unanimous decision in the 119 pounds sub-novice semifinal; and Taylor Fay won her 139 sub-novice semifinal via a decision over Teagan Jones of Bellingham.
