Somerset County Public Schools Superintendent John B. Gaddis has announced his plans to retire, effective June 30, 2024.

Gaddis, who has 35 years of service in public education and 11 years of service with Somerset County Public Schools, made the announcement at the Nov. 14 meeting of the Somerset Board of Education.

Gaddis' message to faculty and staff, and career highlights in Somerset

“There is still much for us to get done in these remaining days and I look forward to working with you to accomplish these tasks,” Gaddis wrote in a message to faculty and staff. “The time to retire has arrived, and I am excited for the future in terms of my family, but also for the school system. As the Board progresses in their search for a new superintendent, I encourage you to take the opportunity to become involved and to advocate for the children of Somerset County.”

Gaddis’ career was focused on serving students and families. Prior to becoming superintendent in Somerset County, he was assistant superintendent for instruction in the Worcester County Public School System. In 2013, he was appointed as superintendent of schools in Somerset County and was reappointed to his second and third terms in 2018 and 2022.

“We appreciate the longevity of service and the stability Dr. Gaddis provided to the SCPS school community through many challenging times, and we wish him the best in retirement and his future endeavors," said Board of Education Chairperson Bill McInturff.

"The Somerset Board of Education will immediately begin the process to search for his successor as the next superintendent of schools. We encourage the Somerset County Public Schools community to participate in our superintendent search through attending our public meetings and providing feedback through each step in the process.”
