Somerset shelter reopens, seeking to find homes for more than 50 animals

Jan. 11—SOMERSET, Pa. — The Humane Society of Somerset County's shelter has reopened its doors.

The shelter's space was at maximum capacity for animals, despite a shortage in staff, forcing the facility to close its doors last month.

"While closed for around one month, staff members were able to prioritize adopting out animals and have also worked to hire new employees," shelter manager Kourtney Lizza said in a release to media.

The center still needs the community's help, she said.

The Humane Society of Somerset County, as well as similar organizations across the country, have seen increases in surrendered and stray animals brought into shelters.

The shelter has 22 cats looking for homes, plus a waiting list of additional ones expected. There are even more dogs, 36 in all, which is over capacity, Lizza said.

"Our kennels are currently full of furry friends who need a loving home," Lizza said. "In the past, our local community has always supported us and we're confident that they will continue to do so now and in the future."

The staff and board members of the Somerset County shelter are encouraging people interested in meeting home-needy cats and dogs to contact the shelter ahead of time at 814-443-2121 to schedule an appointment.

All adopters must complete an adoption application, a copy of which can be found by visiting the HSSC's website, somersetpets.com, and clicking on the "Adopt" button at the top of the home page.

Monetary donations, as well as food, treats and cleaning supplies, are also being accepted.

Supplies such as those can be dropped off at the shelter during normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday.
