Somerset Tire owners ready for next phase

Bob and Colleen Glotfelty are closing the doors of Somerset Tire Inc. at the end of this month as they are retiring after 34 years of service.

The company opened Labor Day week of 1989, with Bob and two employees, along West Main Street, where CVS is now. They were there in the rented space for eight years when CVS decided to tear down the building to build the new pharmacy. Somerset Tire Inc. moved to its current location at 226 Alisa St. in 1997. The move also happened Labor Day weekend, Colleen said.

"We have a nice view here," Bob said, looking out the front windows where almost the entire town of Somerset is laid out before his eyes.

As a young man, Bob worked in the mines until they were shut down. Then he started working for Custer Tire in Berlin before taking a job with Bob's Tire Service in Berkley Springs, West Virginia. It was a three-hour drive six days a week. When Bob told Bob Stotler, the owner, that he was going to resign and go back into mine work, Stotler asked him to run a subsidiary tire service center in Somerset instead.

"Thirty-four years later and here I am," Bob said. "I really like the job."

Colleen started helping with the business in 1999 and has been there ever since. She said the company has employed about 14 people through the 34 years. The two employees currently working at Somerset Tire Inc. have already had job offers from other companies, she said.

The Glotfeltys said there will be no more Somerset Tire Inc. after Feb. 28. The building has already been sold to another company.

During the 34 years of business, the Glotfeltys have seen changes in the price and the size of tires."It's a little different now than it was," Bob said. "Everything is getting heavier, bigger."

The Glotfeltys don't have any specific plans for retirement other than spending time with their grandchildren. They have two children, Alissa Wright and Josh Glotfelty, both of Berlin, and two granddaughters.

"He's worked six days a week most of his life," Colleen said. "It's time to chill out. Family time."

Colleen said she really appreciates the support the customers have given them the past 34 years. Feb. 28 is designated as customer day at Somerset Tire Inc. A celebration with food and refreshments for their customers to say farewell is planned for after 12 p.m. Feb. 24 and all day Feb. 25.
