Need something for the kids to do? Camps for summer 2023 are gearing up in El Paso

As the 2022-23 school year comes to an end, El Paso families could be wondering what to do this summer, besides going to Disneyland or visiting family out of state.

But for those parents who still have to work while the kids are out of school, here are some ideas for keeping them busy. Around El Paso, there are several summer camps available offering sports, dance and music, as well as ones that can teach new skills such as horseback riding or chess.

El Paso Museum of Art offers classes

The El Paso Museum of Art, 1 Arts Festival Plaza, has a variety of classes for youths ages 6-13. Classes combine exploration of galleries and making art in the studio. Tuition includes all materials. Mixed media art classes will start June 26. Information: https://epma.art

Indoor cave climbing

Cave Indoor Climbing will have summer camps from 9 a.m. to noon June 12-15 and July 10-13 at 113 Executive Center Blvd. Cost is $200 per child. Information: https://caveclimbingco.com

Indoor and outdoor climbing camps

Sessions Climbing + Fitness will offer Groovy Climbers summer camps for kids, ages 6 to 13, from July 3-21 at 1775 Cimmaron Rialto Square. The weeklong camps, which will offer the basics of outdoor bouldering and climbing, will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Another camp, Gym to Crag, is for ages 12 to 17. The War Eagles Air Museum will have an aviation summer camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 12-16 at 8012 Airport Road, Santa Teresa, New Mexico. The camp is geared for ages 10 to 14. Cost: $300, excluding fees, available at eventbrite.com. Information: 575-589-2000.

The Riverside High School Rangerettes will have a dance summer camp from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12-14 at the school dance room, 301 Midway Drive. For ages 4-16. Kids will learn jazz, hip-hop and salsa. Cost: $35 per person. Check in from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Kids should bring their own lunch or $3 for pizza, chips and a drink. Information: 915-434-7000.

Gymnastics Elite

Gymnastics Elite will have summer camps for ages 5 and up, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekly, June 5 through July 28, at 12115 Rojas Drive, Suite 900. Campers must bring their own lunch and refillable water bottle.

Weekly tuition for nonmembers is $140; $30 discount available before June 1. No half or single days. Information: www.gymnastics-elite.com

Spanish Language Camp

Language Plus, 1301 N. Oregon St., will have its first Spanish summer camp, for ages 5-12, from June 19-30.

Soccer Camp

The Night Ravens will have summer soccer camps from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 12-16 and June 19-23 at the Galatzan Park, 650 Wallenberg Drive. For ages 3 and older. Cost: $200 for one week; $300 for two weeks. Registration: https://tinyurl.com/y3h6zmfs; information: 915-255-5273.

El Paso Jazz Girls offers cost-free summer program

The El Paso Jazz Girls will offer its sixth annual cost-free summer program June 26-30 for young musicians to write and perform their own music. The program will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 26-29 and from 9 a.m. to noon June 30 at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 8040 Yermoland Drive. The program is geared toward girls ages 11 to 18. The summer program will conclude with a free concert, El Paso Jazz Girls LIVE, for family and friends at 6 p.m. June 30. El Paso Jazz Girls LIVE will feature participants’ original music. Tax-deductible donations are welcome to help support El Paso Jazz Girls’ cost-free programming. The concert will be open to the public.

Femme Frontera has filmmaking workshop

Femme Frontera, a Latinx film organization in the El Paso, Las Cruces and border region, will have a young film makers and artists workshop from noon to 2 p.m. July 10-14. For ages 8 to 12. Kids will be creating a short 1-3 minute movie with the use of a green screen, lights and smart devices. Cost is free; however, a $20 deposit is required to hold the spot and refundable after the class. Information: www.femmefrontera.org/workshops

Fire Department offers free summer youth camp

The El Paso Fire Department is offering a youth camp for local youth to understand about fire and public safety issues. The youth camp is free and will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 20-22 at the El Paso Fire Department’s Training Academy, at 6800 Delta Drive. in Ascarate Park. It is limited to 20 students ages 13-17. Join Summer basketball camp

The House of Hoopz, 11101 Armour Drive, will have a summer basketball camp, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 12-14. For ages prekindergarten through 12th grade. Camp will cover ball handling drills, scrimmages, footwork, strength and conditioning and use of a shooting machine. Cost: $65 per child. Information: 915-704-7124.

Summer chess club

Reyes Elementary School, 7440 Northern Pass Drive, will have its 2023 Summer Chess Camp from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 12-15. Kids will be divided into beginners and intermediate. Cost: $150. Information: Mark Fooladi, 915-373-7943.

Snapology fun camps

Snapology will have a variety of morning and afternoon summer camps starting in June at 12285 Pellicano Drive, B1. Here are some: Amusement parks and super structures, June 5-9; combat robots and snapology scientists, June 19-23; and moviemaking and science of superpowers, June 26-30. There also will be camps in July. Camp cost: $129 for half day, $185 for full day. Information: 915-228-3788.

Sunny Farm camp

Sunny Farm will have a fun outdoor weekly camp for kids from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 5-30 and July 3-18 at 5747 Montoya Drive. It is for children ages 4 to 10 years old. The camps include horseback riding and nature field trips. Cost: $150 per week. Registration: 915-500-9438.

Socorro plans summer camp

The city of Socorro will have a Kids Summer Camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6-8 and June 13-14 at Rio Vista Community Center, 901 N. Rio Vista Road. For ages 5-15 years old. Activities will include outdoor fun, arts and crafts and movies. Information: 915-860-8615.
