Son Heung-min and 27 Rising Stars to Represent South Korea at 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Tottenham Hotspur player Son Heung-min and 27 other rising stars have been tapped to represent South Korea at the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

Here are the details: The announcement was made on Monday by head coach Paulo Bento, according to Yonhap News Agency.

  • FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation decided to make South Korea the host for the remaining Group H matches for Asian countries. The games will take place at the Goyang Stadium in Goyang.

  • The upcoming matches are for the second-round qualifiers. Teams had competed in November 2019, but matches scheduled for 2020 were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • South Korea will first face Turkmenistan at 8 p.m. on June 5, followed by Sri Lanka at 8 p.m. on June 9, with the final match against Lebanon scheduled at 3 p.m. on June 13.

  • North Korea was supposed to compete at the qualifiers against Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan and South Korea but withdrew from the competition. The AFC has yet to find a workaround for North Korea’s absence in the matches.

  • Eight group winners and the four best runners-up from the second round will advance to the next.


Who are the members: The 28-year-old Tottenham Hotspur forward player will take on the captain role for the South Korean men’s national football team.

  • He will be joined by Pohang Steelers midfielder Song Min-kyu, who was named the 2020 K League Young Player of the Year, and Suwon Samsung Bluewings' 19-year-old forward Jung Sang-bin.

  • Players from Europe, including Bordeaux forward Hwang Ui-jo, RB Leipzig midfielder Hwang Hee-chan and Holstein Kiel midfielder Lee Jae-sung, are also joining the South Korean national team.

  • The team has four goalkeepers, with Jo Hyeon-woo from Ulsan Hyundai taking the top spot.

  • Ulsan Hyundai players Won Du-jae, Hong Chul and Kim Tae-hwan will cover the defense side of the team along with Beijing Guoan’s Kim Min-jae, Gamba Osaka’s Kim Young-gwon and Los Angeles FC’s Kim Moon-hwan.


Son, who scored 17 goals in the Premier League and 22 goals in all competitions, a new career-high in the current season, was recently subjected to online racial abuse following the 3-1 defeat against Manchester United.
