Son shares a survivor's story at library on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day: A Survivor’s Story and Life After will be presented by Mark Friedemann at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Leon County Main Library, 200 W. Park Ave. The event can also be attended virtually via Zoom.

Join Leon County Government on International Holocaust Remembrance Day as Mark Friedemann, a Tallahassee environmental consultant, will discuss the life of his father, Richard Friedemann, a Holocaust survivor who fled to the United States and later settled in Tallahassee.

Though Richard Friedemann passed away in 2019, his memories and stories live on through his son.

Mark Friedemann will recount his father’s life growing up in Poland, his experiences in four Nazi concentration camps, liberation, and life in the United States. The lecture will include a display of historical photographs and documents as well as his father’s concentration camp uniform.

After the lecture, citizens are invited to view an exhibit featuring historical documents and photographs from Richard Friedemann’s life, including his Holocaust identification card, on display at the Main Library from now through Jan. 31, 2022.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1945.

This annual day of commemoration honors and remembers the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and promotes Holocaust education to prevent future genocides.
