Son stows dead dad in wheelbarrow and collects benefits for 2 years, Indiana cops say

An Indiana man is accused of hiding the body of his dead father in a wheelbarrow and collecting thousands in benefit checks for two years, media outlets report.

Irvin Nicholson Jr., 57, was charged with felony welfare fraud and misdemeanor failure to report a dead body in Goshen, a town in northern Indiana, The Elkhart Truth reported.

The investigation into Nicholson began in September 2019 when police found human bones in the back yard of a home, The Goshen News reported. Nicholson told a detective he argued with his father about moving into a retirement home two years earlier and found him dead the next morning in the garage, the newspaper reported.

Nicholson wrapped his dead father in a blanket and put his body in a wheelbarrow, WSBT reported. The remains were later moved to the home where police found them, the TV station reported.

The coroner couldn’t determine the father’s cause of death, according to WSBT.

Nicholson is accused of collecting about $46,000 in benefit funds, The Goshen News reported.
