Sonic Christmas Parade, tree lighting in Lafayette: When and where to celebrate

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Lafayette.

The lights and decorations are going up all over town. And downtown Lafayette is no different.

The Merry & Bright festivities kick off on Thursday. Downtown businesses will decorate their windows in scenes of winter wonderlands and Parc International will be filled with decorated Christmas trees.

The celebrations are highlighted with the Sonic Christmas Parade, tree lighting and Movies in the Parc.

When is the Sonic Christmas Parade and what is the route?

The Sonic Christmas Parade marks the arrival of Santa in Lafayette. It features floats, high school marching bands and dance clubs.

It starts at 1 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Jefferson Street underpass in downtown. It will wind down Jefferson Street toward Johnston Street and the Oil Center.

After the parade, there will be a carnival from 2-5 p.m. at Parc International complete with a photo opp with Santa. Children also can bring their letters to Santa, which will be collected and mailed to the North Pole.

Other activities include a carousel, cookie decorating, balloon art, face painting, a petting zoo, fun jumps, a mobile arcade and food trucks.

When is the Christmas tree lighting?

The Merry & Bright holiday series starts with a concert and lighting of the Christmas tree at Parc International.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on Dec. 3. for this free event and Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble will take the stage. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Pets and ice chests should be left at home.

When is the movie at Parc International?

A special holiday screening of "The Polar Express" will start on Dec. 10 at Parc International.

Gates open at 3:30 p.m. for children's activities like fun jumps and photo ops with Santa. The movie starts after dark.
