Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has teased the arrival of Shadow.

It comes after last year's second movie promised the addition of the classic video game character to the movie franchise during a credits scene.

The exciting moment saw "Project Shadow" mentioned, before cutting to Prison Island and Shadow opening his eyes.

Now, the franchise's official X (formerly Twitter) account has shared a first-look image of Shadow, showing his knuckles and feet next to a clapperboard.

"Off and RUNNING," they wrote. "#SonicMovie3 Only in theatres December 20, 2024".

The tease comes after it was confirmed back in August that production on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would begin in September, with crew getting some early background shots amid the then-Hollywood strikes.

Meanwhile, last year Sonic producers Toby Ascher and Neal H Moritz said that Dr Robotnik would not be recast should Jim Carrey not return for the next movie, with the actor previously suggesting he may take a break from acting.

"Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he'll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around," Ascher told IGN.

"We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he'd like to be there with us."

Moritz added: "And I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from it."

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set for release in cinemas on December 20, 2024. Both Sonic the Hedgehog movies can be streamed on Paramount+.
