Sonny Cumbie completes Louisiana Tech football staff with Peter Hopkins as running backs coach

Sonny Cumbie has once again completed his first coaching staff at Louisiana Tech, selecting Peter Hopkins as the Bulldogs' running backs coach.

Hopkins, who was the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Kilgore College in Texas the past three seasons, was hired after Tech assistant Brock Hays left the staff for Troy.

The hire marks Hopkins' return to Ruston, where he served as a graduate assistant in 2013 and 2014 under former coach Skip Holtz. While on staff, the Bulldogs won the Conference USA West Division in 2014 and defeated Illinois in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

“We’re excited to welcome Peter Hopkins back to the Bulldog Family,” Cumbie said in a news release Tuesday. “Peter has great passion for people and for teaching young people about football and life. We’re looking forward to Peter developing our running backs as people and as playmakers.”

Hopkins played his college football in Texas. He was a quarterback at Tyler Junior College in 2006-07 and then a tight end at Sam Houston State 2007-08.

After his playing days were over, Hopkins returned to Tyler Junior College as a running backs coach, then joined the high school coaching ranks after his stint at Louisiana Tech.

“I am beyond grateful to Coach Cumbie and the entire LA Tech administrative and coaching staff for this tremendous opportunity," Hopkins said in the release. "Louisiana Tech has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm excited for the chance to return to Ruston under Coach Cumbie. Great things are ahead for this program."
